I have a 760 CPU and it runs at 800MHz most of the time which is fine because I'm not doing much, but when I want to do lots like a defrag or mass file copy. Is there a way I can turn the wick up to max 2.0GHz of loving?
-
It should go upto that speed automatically, thats is how Speedstep is supposed to work, when cpu usage is low 800MHz is what it will run at and when cpu usage goes above a certain % then it will increase to 2.0GHz.
But if you want it to run at 2.0GHz24/7 then set your Power Scheme to "Always On". -
Ahah! Cool.
Toshiba's had a power management tool, but the HP's don't. Any idea on a quick way to swap from portable/laptop profile to always on? or even better always on when it knows it is on AC. -
The best thing is to leave it untouched. The CPU knows better than you when it needs to work at full speed and when not. Put it on full speed all the time, it's just gonna generate unnecessary heat.
-
If you run your CPU at full frequency all the time, the younger it will die and burn up like a hotdog in the microwave for 7 minutes on high !
-
above posters are correct. there's no need to run at max all the time. the cpu throttles when necessary and opens up when necessary.
running at full steam all the time will see your notebook to an early grave.
this principle is why some people actually undervolt their cpus to reduce heat, extend battery life, and ultimately extend the life of their machine. -
Make sure your Bios is updated as well!(my A04 bios that shipped with my Dell limited my 2Ghz processor to 800Mhz! WTF?
-
I've got the latest bios, and she definately hits 2GHz. Maybe I'll switch it back to portable profile now.
-
i don't think the power profile determines whether the processor uses stepping or not does it? it just controls screen and hdd shut down, processor step is controlled in BIOS isn't it?
-
That is exactly what I thought, but putting it to Always on. The cpu would sit at 2GHz. Well according to mobile meter. I need something to monitor memory now, sick of using task manager.

How do I run my processor at full speed
