So I have been reading around and I was wondering which ram stick will work on my laptop a HP DV4t. What i mean is some ram sticks have either 4 chips on each side or 8 chips on each side.

Why do you need to know what number of chips your RAM has?
Instead you should be trying to figure out up to how much RAM the CPU supports, how many RAM slots your laptop has, and which memory type it is (DDR2 or DDR3).
You can find this out on HP's product support page, just look up your model. -
You can also go to www.Kingston.com and look up your computer model.
Also, amount of chips on each side hasn't mattered since PC100 RAM back in the 90's. -
It's harder for the dv4t since it spans two generations. The earlier ones use DDR2, but the recent ones use DDR3. Download CPU-Z and you can see what your computer uses.

i have ddr2, and 8gb is the max it matters because i have read mix reviews about some saying their laptops don't support the 8 chip and some support the 4 chip
-
It doesn't matter.

What matters is whether it is DDR2 or DDR3 and clock speed. -
most memory sellers have an on-line configurator. plug in your laptop model and they tell you what ram they sell to fit.

8GB is max for hp..especially on old Dv4ts... and there are no 8GB DDR2 chips from what i know and they would probably cost more than your laptop's worth.
