I m thinking of picking up a Vostro 1400 and it will come with a Celeron processor. I was just wondering what sort of performance I would get using it for internet/word processing compared to a Core 2 Duo? I havent used a celeron since years ago.
Also, does anyone know whether I would be able to fit a T5x50 (667Mhz FSB) socket P into it? As I have only noticed Dell only sold Vostros with T5x70 (800Mhz FSB) in them...

Celerons ain't that bad....I do video editing and photo editing, word processing, etc etc with a Celeron M 420....its fine, not that slow..
(and I am running vista)
Yes you can upgrade to the T5x50....or even higher..!!
Get a BIOS upgrade A07 or later, and the notebook might be able to support Penryns as well..!! -
Hey thanks for the quick reply,
I am just not sure about the upgrading since the Vostro always had the T5x70 with 800MHz FSB rather than 667MHz, as I can pick up the T5x50 much cheaper and easier!
Is there actually a reason to get the M550 @ 2.0GHz as opposed to the M540 @ 1.83GHz? -
You won't even notice a difference between the performance of the M540 and M550....
If you are on to upgrading yourself, then get the cheapest CPU, and fit in any socket P merom, it should work....Socket Ps are known to easily throttle anywhere between 400-800MHz..!! Say a T5270 will also work well, as well as a T5450....
But the motherboard will have a GL960 chipset as opposed to the i965GM which comes with the Core 2 Duos..!!The GL960 is said to only support a max of 2GB PC2-5300 ram but the i965GM supports 4GB ram....
Check out this non-Dell thread....they have the GL960 chipsets, came pre-installed with Celeron 540 and 550s, and have been upgraded to the T9500, but only support a max of 2GB ram..!! (Can't say if it is a BIOS lock-down or a chipset limitation)
How do the Celerons (M540/M550) perform in everyday tasks?
