I'm intrigued to understand how the BIOS and hence Windows "knows" the native resolution of the LCD screen which is part of the laptop. There's a number of threads here advising that a different resolution screen can simply be installed in a laptop [with some minor considerations], but where does the resolution info come from?

For example, the BIOS on my Dell D520 shows 1400x1050, where does this info come from?

Please someone explain, I hate it when I have an unanswered question, yet I have searched here and Google.

    Thanks in advance

the info if I am not wrong comes from the board located behind te LCD (usually in the top part of the LCD)
