How does the i7-6920HQ compare to an i7-2600/i7-6700 (both non-K)?

I'm essentially being forced to give up my current desktop (the lease has expired), and I can either get another desktop (i7-6700) or get a laptop instead (i7-6920HQ). Cost is a non-issue here.

Would you rather have a laptop or desktop? The desktop one is going to be faster.

The 6700 will be faster... However do you want a desktop or a laptop? Also is there any graphics card etc involved? Can you give more details about the configs?

Why not get a Clevo laptop with a 6700k desktop CPU? If need a laptop, you could just do that... otherwise, if you don't need a laptop, just get a desktop.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure on the specs. All I know is that the laptop is a Thinkpad with a 6920HQ (which I'm guessing will be either the P50 or T560), and the desktop is a ThinkStation with a 6700. Both are stated to have 32GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD (or was it 480GB?).

Because this is a "pick from a predefined list for a bulk order" kind of situation.

The i7-6700 is faster by 300MHz on 4 core turbo. It will also hold its clocks MUCH better and without issue. If you do not care for a laptop specifically, then get the desktop. Otherwise, they'll do most work-related things (unless you render much video etc) similarly.

I feel your pain with this preferred list deal. I feel your pain greatly.

It's not mine ;) I'm simply using it until either the lease is over 3 years later, or it breaks. On top of that, I'm being forced to "upgrade" to Win 8.1 :( TBH, part of me really hopes that Lenovo takes their sweet time refreshing their lineup with Skylake so I have an excuse to hang on to my current Win 7 desktop for as long as possible.

Besides, would you pay $1350 for a desktop with those specs? The laptop is a much better deal at $1500, but even then it's just a lease, not outright ownership. Of course, since I'm not spending my own money on it I don't really care.
