I am planning on getting the E1705 and keep hearing that I should save money by getting the lower end RAM and CPU and upgrading myself. Now I have no real technical skill or knowledge about the innerworkings of laptops. Would it just be a matter of unscrewing the bottom and swapping them in or would it involve soddering (or other things besides easy swaps)?

Ram is easy. CPU isn't as easy. :p I have only installed ram myself and that took me 2 minutes to do. lol Just get the right ram and it will be easy to install.

Yeah the RAM is located right under a removeable door on your notebook. Very easy, and it would be smart to do that. But the to get to the CPU, as NetBrakr shows, its pretty much dismantling your whole notebook. Plus replacing the CPU would void any warranty you have on it. Im not 100% sure about the RAM voiding your warranty, but im 85% sure it wouldnt. Does anyone know for sure if it wont void a warranty?

Well amusingly enough, I can get the laptop 300 dollars cheaper if i buy more RAM, so I wont have to do either myself.

If you buy the priciest base model for the E1705 you get 35% off, as opposed to 20% off the cheapest. So when i added all the features i wanted to the cheap version, it ended up costing more after discounts than the expensive one. Go figure.

Replacing the RAM will not void your warranty. Dell just won't cover the new RAM.
