I see many entry level Core Duo laptops with this Celeron option and I'm curious how it performs. Anyone has a laptop with Celeron 420? How fast is it compared to say a Pentium M 1.6Ghz?

I'm planning to buy some laptops for the office mainly for internet and MS office use so budget is prime concern ($600-800). There are business notebook offerings with this from HP/Compaq and IBM so I'm interested in this.

    Thanks!

It's probably close in performance to a 1.6GHz Pentium M, a bit slower.

The Celeron M's are essentially older Pentium Ms with half the cache and no power management (SpeedStep).

i think that these are Yonah based celeron, the 400 series. There not dual core, and have a 1 Mb cache, but they are good value.

As Chaz has said, they don't have any power management, so may not be all that good with battery life. Compared with a Pentium M, it's probably a bit slower, because of its 400 Mhz bus, and its smaller cache.

I see...so even if the Celeron 420 is newer, does it mean I'll be better off with a Pentium M 1.6 if price is the same?

Yup thats better. The pecking order is Core Duo + Turion X2 > Pentium M + Turion 64 > Celeron + Sempron.
