I want to buy a laptop with a Blu-ray drive (R/W). I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 1525 or XPS 1530. I was told it's very important to make sure the Profile of the drive is 1.1 (rather than 1.0). I've talked with Dell (both sales & tech) & they don't know what I'm talking about. How can I get these specs before I buy? Thanks to everyone.

Who told you? IDK, but doesn't the profile have more to do with the stand alone players than PC drives.

Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc) says you get picture in picture with 1.1 (rather than 1.0). If I'm buying something new, I want to get the latest & greatest.

I don't know what "IDK" means.

Maybe that's the question I should be asking. Are the profiles relevant when the player is in a PC?

I don't know, but why would PIP be important on a PC when you can just open another window? I think this relates to stand alone players, not PCs. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Hello. I have an external LG BE06 with which I've watched a decent number of movies and TV series.

The supported features/profile depends on the software that you use for playback. The most popular seem to be:
    - Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra (7.3 & 8)
    - ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre
    - WinDVD 9 Plus Bluray
    - Nero Showtime (probably not as popular as the others?)

Each product page will list the currently supported features. Any software that is bundled with the drive will probably be restricted in features, so check that out and budget for the full release if needed.

I own PowerDVD 8 Ultra and WinDVD 9 Plus Bluray and prefer PowerDVD. Although I haven't encountered any myself, I believe that there can sometimes be problems with certain movies and each of the software players has it's own set of issues. The forums at slysoft and avsim are quite helpful.

Edit: just to confim, PowerDVD supports Bonus View (1.1):

    and BD-Live (2.0):

    As does ArcSoft:

I'm pretty sure that Corel does as well but I couldn't see it on their site after a quick look.

Oh I see. The Profile numbers have to do with the software, not the hardware. I thought maybe to playback Profile 2.0 disks, you'd need different hardware. That's why I wanted to make sure I got the latest hardware. But if it's just software, that's a lot easier to upgrade.

Thanks for all the links. They were very useful. A Dell product will probably ship with WinDVD. I'll have to see if it has all the features I want. I see for those with the older version of PowerDVD, they get a free upgrade. That's always nice & something to keep in mind if I need to purchase a product.

The slysoft forum looks like it could be useful. For avsim, I went to www.avsim.com, but it's an aviation simulation forum. Don't know if they'd like their forum cluttered with DVD questions.

    Thanks for all your help.
