Really don't know which forums this goes so...
I recently ordered a Gateway m-285e tablet, its 14'' and has the following specs...
    t 7400(?) 2.1 ghz, 2 gigs Ram, 100 gig 7200 rpm, windows xp tablet edition, x1400...
    but it weighs 6.8 pounds
I plan to carry it around school everyday (in a case of course), but is it too heavy to lug around everyday in school?

That's very heavy for a 14 incher, and at the top of the scale for a 15.4" machine. Not something I would want to carry around everyday, but on the bright side, not many people take their laptops to classes anyways.

Edit: Just checked, my G1S tips the scale at 6.83 pounds, and this is a gaming machine. Definitely not something I lug around every day.

My D830 weights a bit over 6lbs and I do end up carrying it around. I do think it's a bit heavy if you're doing a lot of moving, but you get more accustomed to it after a while. However, 6.8lbs as Lithus said is indeed really heavy for a 14" laptop.

My Inspiron 9300 weighs about 8.1 pounds without A/C adapter, and I can stand to carry it around when I need to. I played Sousaphone in my high school marching band, and that sucker was 40+ pounds of brassy goodness, and I never had any problems with it. On the other hand, my ThinkPad T61 weighs about 4.5 pounds, and on any given day I'd much rather be carrying it. It's all about weight distribution and what you get used to, essentially.

I can't imagine a 6.8-pound 14" notebook, though. Is it made of brick? That's probably going to feel absurdly heavy just because the weight density will be rather extreme.

Tablets are way heavier than the equivalent sized laptop.

I have a Vostro 1500 with an advertised 6.8 pounds or so (haven't confirmed) and I carry it between classes and ride about 20km/day with it and it is fine. Those that say otherwise probably need some exercise! Just make sure you get a comfortable backpack.

I set a limit of 3KG, for a 15.4 and ended up getting a samsung X65 which came in at 2.4kg IIRC. my old Sony was 2.9kg IIRC and i was suprised how much you notice that -500g.

Also, and I always hate to be obvious, but it depends what you carry it in... it's going to feel a lot heavier in a messenger bag than it would in a bag pack... that being said, I walk 40min to campus with my 6 pound dv6000t in a messenger bag everyday and I dont usually mind the weight.

I agree, the difference between carrying the laptop in messenger bag and backpack is very noticeable.

Empty bags can weigh anywhere between about 0.75kg and 2kg which makes a big difference to the total weight.

My 1700 is about 9 pounds and I have no problem carrying it almost every day in college. That's about as much weight as two average textbooks so it's a light load compared to the 4 textbooks and a binder I had to carry in high school.

Yeah it should not be too bad to carry around. I definitely miss carrying my 2.9 lb x300 to class ;) but my 6.8 lb vostro isn't too bad either. It weighs about as much as a large text book does.
