How hot does your CPU get?

There seems to be a good amount of debate as to what's too hot - and to be fair, it has changed with different chips, at least according to Intel. If my memory serves me correctly, the maximum supported operating temperature is:

    Pentium 4 - 75 Celsius
Pentium M - ? someone can fill this in ?
    Core 2 - 100 Celsius
Core 2 Extreme Penryn - 105 Celsius (possibly all Penryns)

So what do most of the chips run at at full power? Post the chip type and model as well and I'll compile the results so we'll have a nice reference chart, and one more accurate than votes not taking into account who has a cool Pentium 4 and who has a more heat-resistant Core 2.

Celsius appreciated but I can convert if you only have Fahrenheit.

I'll start: Dell Inspiron 1520 running T7500 (2.2 GHz) with stock cooling; reaches 82 celsius with both cores at 100%. Tested done using wPrime, both cores at 100%.

Processor (CPU) System Type/Model Maximum Temp (Degrees Celsius) Testing Program Other Notes
    K-TRON AMD Opteron 185 (2.6 GHz dual) Voodoo Envy U709 55 Multiple
    K-TRON AMD 3200+ (2.2 GHz single) Voodoo M855 55 Multiple
    K-TRON Core 2 Duo T5300 (1.73 GHz) Dell Inspiron E1505 58 Multiple Undervolted
    K-TRON Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0 GHz) Lenovo T61 75 Multiple Undervolted
    Apollo13 Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2 GHz) Dell Inspiron 1520 82 wPrime

For accuracy's sake, make sure all cores are being utilized 100% for the temperatures. Suggested programs for this include Prime 95, orthos, burnmax and WCG, and wPrime (thanks K-Tron), though any program that pushes your CPU to 100% for a long time should work. Notating any unusual circumstances such as testing in a freezer is appreciated.

I cannot enter all of my cpu's temps in the poll, but I will list them:

My opteron 185 (2.6Ghz dual) in my voodoo envy U709 maxxes out at 53-55C under full load for hours. This cpu uses 125 watts of power. The fans are always on full and the cpu is not undervolted - Opteron's need their power for stability

My T5300 (1.73Ghz dual) in my E1505 maxxes out at 58C, I have my cpu undervolted all multipliers to 0.950V, and I use i8kfangui to force fans to full speed, all of the time. This cpu uses 28 watts when undervoltedd

The T7300 (2Ghz dual) in my Lenovo T61 maxxes out at around 75C, even when undervolted because it does not have fan control. This cpu uses 31 watts when undervolted

The AMD 3200+ (single core 2.2Ghz) in my voodoo M855 maxxes out at 55C, I always have the fans on full. This cpu uses 65 watts. The board does not support undervolting.

The 2.0Ghz P4M processor in my Dell 8500 maxxes out at 60C and I always leave the fans on full speed. P4M's cannot be undervolted, and this cpu uses 44watts I believe.

The 1.6Ghz P4M in my 23 Dell C640's which I have sold, maxxed out at 64C with the fans always locked to full speed. These cpu's cannot be undervolted and also use 44 watts of power.

My temps are determined by i8kfangui, core temp and Get Thermal, I run World Community Grid to get the cores up to 100% usage

Suggestion we pick an application (I would pick Prime95) to stress. Agree on the test and duration?

I have run prime 95, orthos, burnmax and WCG, for many hours on end, and I am sure that my temps are accurate. However they do decrease in the winter time and increase a tad if it is extra hot.

The problem is people telling the truth. Obviously some joker went and clicked the never above 30C box, which is 100% not possible unless you live in the tundra where it is always 0C or colder

    Acer Aspire 3680; Celeron M 420 1.6MHz (Yonah)[email protected] max temp - 58*C; @2.0GHx max temp - 64*C, cpu stressing using Prime95

    Dell D630; Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000 (Penryn XE)[email protected] max temp - 78*C; @3.2GHz - 84*C; @3.8GHz - 96*C (then automatic shut-down :D), cpu stressing using Orthos

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4-HT ( No Speedstep :() that never goes past 74 degrees Celsius at 100%. It idles between 57-60 degrees Celsius. Can't wait till monday, will be looking for a cheap replacement for this Dell!

I plan on getting a cheap laptop (14" with dedicated graphics, less than $1000) for my brother and I to use so for now (this old Inspiron has outlived its use) and then next summer I will buy my more expensive 13" for college. My brother wants to play Flight Sim X with decent frame rates, and I want to be able to browse the web and play Simcity 4 without loud fans turning on.

Too tired to put together a table tonight. But glad to see some results coming in. One question:

I see the D630 isn't offered with the X9000. Yet it obviously is working for you. Were you able to overclock it right after installing it, or were there a bunch of hoops to hop through?

Mine tends to hover at 33 - 34 degrees for each core at idle...........jumps to 51 - 53 degrees when it's running at 100% load for more than a few seconds...........nothing fancy in the cooling solution or the laptop aside from AS-5 when I installed the new CPU.

Yep, it came with the T7250.
But I found a listing on Ebay for the X9000 ES, written in the ad that the D630 was one of the very few laptops that could be upgraded from the Merom to the Penryn XE, and since it was cheap, I gave it a try.
Was a real pain in the backside, since it installed absolutely fine, windows booted quickly, but the BIOS didn't show any options for overclocking. It was just the way it was. I had to overclock in windows using CrystalCPUID.
So was planning to flash the M1730 BIOS, but I knew that wouldn't work; tried to play around with the Phoenix BIOS Editor; then finally came across a guy - BIOSMAN....Gave him an excel sheet for all the requirements, the M1730 and D630 BIOS, and he kind of merged selective options from both the BIOSes into one and I took the risk of flashing it, and luckily it worked just fine, with everything just as I needed. Can overclock it to 4.0GHz via the multiplier, but normally I used to keep it at 3.8GHz, since 4.0 made it a bit too hot (62*C idle).

For some reason my t5450 in my Gateway gets up to 85-90c when only running WOW which doesn't even utilize it 100% so I'm not going to run any stress benchmarks (my gpu stays under 60 in the same circumstances). I'm thinking the CPU needs reseated or needs an application of thermal paste but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The 6860 w/t9300- 56C both cores 100%, using Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (This is the most accurate of all tools for the Intel camp)

The NR310E/S T2370(Merom C2D with only 1mb cache)- 82C (LOL!) both cores 100% using TAT.

I just undervolted my processor (1.2500V -> 1.1500V), temperatures are much lower now!
