How hot is to hot for pascal GPU dies?

Summer is here and I have been running off my fans to keep it from going over 80c, mainly because my AC is dead and because I am giving Kyronaut a try. Why Kyronaut? Well because Conductonaut has weird aging characteristics that I do not know how to accommodate, though its possible I am also using to little. The bios programming wont kick on higher fan speeds till it hits 85c, and for me thats too hot so I just keep it on max manually to which it doesnt go over 80c even on a blasted hot day with no AC. So should I give LM conductonaut another try to lower temps, or is kyronaut just fine? I am kind of concerned I might kill my gpu if I dont go to LM, but give me your thoughts.

GPU is the GP104 die 1070 mobile.

 

You’re fine. The GPU can handle running at 80C for years.

 

yup, anything below 90C is fine for long term, anything below approx. 95 is alright for short bursts.

95c? I dont think I have ever gone past 86c I am curious and maybe you can answer this, what does it mean when afterburner says temps drop to zero during idle?

 

do you have switchable graphics? could mean that the temp sensor / the gpu was swiched off, giving over to the igpu.

Hmm. Well there is intel gpu, but its technically not usable, or even an option to use as I dont have optimus. Interesting.

 

80-85 is fine, i'd be looking at improving the cooling of your machine if you were hitting 90 regularly though as Pascal cores usually run pretty cool. From my experience, GPUs seem to fail more often due to heat than CPUs, so I prefer to keep mine as cool as possible. I think this was more of an issue on older mobile GPUs though, such as the mobile Tesla GPUs which were notorious for dying due to poor BGA solder. The old Sandy Bridge i5 in my backup Dell turdbook still works fine though, even after living through several thousands of hours of strategy games at 90-98 degrees .

 

As others have said. Aim to keep it below 90c.

 

I remember those days. I had 2 Tesla laptops one with the NVIDIA IGPU (6150m) and the other one that was replaced for free with the Nvidia 8400GS and they both died less than a year. Good times...

Keep your GPU temps under 90C if possible, i learned that lesson the hard way when my 750m died after 4 & half years after even though i cleaned out the vents and repaste the CPU and GPU every year.

 

Personally I do not feel using GPUs when they get above 75 C, it try to keep below 70 C. 80+ is danger zone not for the GPU die maybe, but for supporting components like resistors, capacitors, MOSFETs, etc
