I just ordered a Lenovo T530 laptop. How long does a T530 usually last? I am not going to be doing much intense traveling with it except for shifting it around my house. Occasionally, I plan to use it while traveling. I haven't taken a warranty yet. Should I get one?

I also just ordered a 500 GB Western Digital external hard drive. Can I just keep it hooked up to the computer? Is it also possible to seed (as in torrents) from the external hard drive?

I've abused my W520 quite a lot and it's still going strong after a year and a half (W5x0 and T5x0 use the same body). They have a metal internal roll cage to protect the hardware inside, so you should be good for at least 4 years (assuming the hard drive doesn't crash from a drop).

And what about the external hard drive?

The external hard drive can be plugged in as long as you like, just make sure to safely eject if you want to remove it. It'll be seen as just another drive on your system.

Whether or not you can seed will be determined by your ISP, not the drive. Just don't seed any illegal content and you should be fine.

Allright, thanks! I was just concerned about the speed of the external hard drive.

Unless if you live in Korea, Japan, Sweden, or one of the other 5 or so technologically advanced parts of the world, your external hard drive will be about 100x faster than your internet connection.

An external hard drive will be plenty fast enough for seeding purposes, even over USB 2.0.

For a 1.5Mb/s DSL package, typical download speeds are about 160KB/s, and much slower for upload speeds. So yeah, much much slower than an external drive.
