I am using a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 9100. It has a 2.16gh Pentium 4 processor. It is VERY noisy. Everyone with your new notebooks need to stop complaining, your noise has fan got nothing on mine. :p

I will post a video of it. Right now the fan won't go off.

Have you ever cleaned the fan vents? My girlfriends old 9100 was noisy, but only when the processor was working full load was it 100% annoying. During normal operations you could hear it, but it was tolerable.

Clean them up, think about investing in a notebook cooling pad, and make sure you don't run your CPU full speed all the time. If you try some of those, I am sure you fan won't be coming on full blast anymore.

Sounds like an airport, that is loud. Like a jet engine up close.

My laptop is somewhat loud. It is not annoying but definitely audible just about everywhere in a room when the fan is at or above 70% of its maximum rotation speed. At idle it is essentially unnoticeable unless you listen for it. My laptop has two fans.

What you are using is basically a desktop CPU - or at best an unsuccesfully sawed-off desktop CPU. Pentium 4 is actually inferior to Pentium M aka Centrino at similar GHz and power draws. Pentium 4 was discontinued due to the fact that Intel could not overcome its severe thermal problems.

In other words, it is a dinosuar. And it aint surprising that your fan has to spin up to near-hurricane levels to prevent the thing from melting down.

Why anyone would in the first place design a laptop and put the P4 in there is beyond me - at all times it was never a good choice, given that you have less room in a laptop to place what needs to be used to cool that sucka down.

Comes on whenever I hit 60 degrees Celsius and turns off when the temperature goes down to 50. Sound it makes it a low-medium whir. Core Duo + x1400. Stays off rest of time. Gateway M465U.

    Battery/Surfing ~once every 10 minutes
    Power/Surfing ~once every 7 minutes
    Power/Gaming ~constant

I got this computer 4 years ago when I was in 8th grade. My mom and aunt picked it out for us, we just gave them suggestions (don't remember what, though). Within the next year I hope to get a job and upgrade to a Sony Vaio SZ with Centrino Pro or Montevina in it, and leave this to my brother :D

Its nothing personal on the computer - just letting you know WHY it is so loud. It was not really meant to be stuffed in a box 1" wide with a million other components so close. Not your fault - you are just dealing with the consequences.

But its not a matter of laptop brand - that particular CPU requires your fan to be on heavy duty action, otherwise it would overheat and die pronto.
