Just curious; Haven't bought a new computer in quite a while, so I only have 320gb hdd atm. I'll admit I end up deleting stuff quite often, so I'd definately like to have say, twice that amount. So I'd be quite comfortable with about 600gb of space. What about you guys? hard disk memory doesnt really have much of a limit these days; 1tb externals are pretty common, I'm sure if one wanted one could get quite a bit more... how much is enough?![]()

Everybody's needs are different. Depends on what you run or install or leave installed on your PC. Depends on if you leave games installed after you more or less have finished them.
For Laptops, 500GB are pretty typical, and with the Samsung Momentus XT, its performance is almost like an SSD with your most commonly used programs, but enough space to store most of your stuff.
I personally also have 7TB of storage space on a home server, so it doesn't matter much to me really. -
I'm perfectly happy with 120GB of hard drive space, possibly even less. I just uninstall games that I don't want to play for a while, if need be.
But RAM? That's a different matter altogether. Crysis Sandbox 2 tends to eat up a LOT of RAM. -

I have both of my 500gb HDD's maxed out in my G73 and on my desktop I have 8 HDDs almost full with about 1TB each.
-
i feel that i have enough to where if i ever need more storage i would buy it.
too much is clutter space and if 1 dies all die. except if you have a raid controller. using onboard sucks -
I've been doing fine with a 500GB hard drive in the M15x. More would be nice, but it hardly matters (the 250GB hard drive I used in the M11x however, was small enough to be stress inducing). The R60e only has something like a 40GB or 60GB hard drive (I don't even remember), but it's mostly an internet machine so whatever capacity is has is more than enough more than enough.
Now all I need is a SSD that's a decent size. -
I need at least 160GB, but I suppose... if I had to I could cut back to ~120GB of data quite easily. My current laptop has a 320GB hard drive of which I only use 150GB, so I'm quite space wasting.

I need a lot of TBs, so many files. @_@
-
funny thing is who luggs a homeserver around or even nas storage?
hopefully this is an internal HDD thread and not a mass storage home HDD station you have in your desktop.
500gb + SSD + flash drive = WIN ( you don't want to clutter your hdd now do you? ) -
on a notebook, maybe 500 GB, 250 for each partition. (ubuntu and windows).
Desktop, maybe much more, like 2 terabytes or something. -
yeap my old notebook had 320Gb H/D and it was not even close to being enough, my new notebook has 1TB H/D and i also now have 2x 1TB external H/D for storage purposes.
-
Netbook: 160 gb
Laptop: 160 gb (sold, but replacing with a 4820tg soon)
Desktop: 500 gb + 320 gb
HTPC: 1 tb + 2 tb (also functions as a server/nas)
None of these are over 50% full -
Im fine with my 500GB on the laptop
-
I have 60gig on my notebook and 1T external hard drive about 90% full .
-
I have a 128 gb ssd and a Scorpio 320gb hdd, and several 500 gb external hdd's. I have over 100gb free on my ssd, about 83 gb free on my hdd, and several hundred gb free on my externals. Also, I have 3 copies of my backups on my externals.
-
At least 1TB, but I'll be moving to 1.256TB (~1168.9GB) eventually.
-
I have 500GB with 66GB's used on bootcamp and 36GB's used on OS X. Once I install my games I will be using around 120GB on bootcamp
-
SSD for my new laptop, currently on 4 external drive with over 1.5TB of space to use. Great for backups on the go. Current laptop only sees about 5-6GB free space nowadays though.
-
500 gb seems to be plenty for me. 81gb left (and its just because of fraps recording things
)
-
you will not have enough space , you'll always need more
once you see lots of space in your partition , you'll always feel like filling it up -
Ive only used about 400 of the 640gb on my desktop and ive used barely any of the 500gb in ym notebook. Then again i dont like to have too many files on one hard drive due to the impact it has on performance. On my old desktop which only had about 130gb in total i used nearly all of the space with games and music etc and it got so rediculously slow i had to reformat it and start again.
-
lately my "feel safe" area is around 100gb free... when i go to 2 digits, i start to panic with the realisation that i'm almost full.
-
Lesson one, just buy a windows home server and get a few 2TB green drives and you'll be set for a while, with future expansion options.
-
500GB onboard, maybe 80GB used. 160GB - 500GB each on various bare drives, no NAS no server no enclosures. Universal Adapters ftw
-
For some reason I just hate when I see that i'm past the 200 mark(320GB HDD)..I would start clearing stuff and removing other garbage.
-
i thought 320gb was ok but i got a new laptop with 500gb and even all that was almost gone. Of course i could make better use of my HD space . Better safe than sorry.
-
I like keeping 15% free, and the smallest drive I can deal with now is 500gb. I have a 1+1TB setup now which is comfortable, I'll need another 1tb external in about 6 months
-
The nice thing about having a smaller drive though, is you learn to clean house on a regular basis and don't carry around as much crap on your drive.
-
I have a 320GB HDD, but I like to keep at least 50% of it free. So I guess that means I'm comfortable with 160 gigs.

150GB is plenty but ideal would be 250GB SSD that maxes out SATA 2
Space wise I would use less than 100GB. All music goes on external as does other important data while I keep max 3 games installed at any one time. Obv if I got my dream 250GB SSD then I could stick all data onto it with loads of space to spare still. As for ram I wouldn't say no to 8GB but its high cost doesn't justify me upgrading just yet.
-
500gb is good for me..., atm I have 300gb left, but that will soon change once I install the rest of the games I have.
-
i use about 100gb on my main drive and 1tb on my 1.5tb media drive. most of its pictures and video archives, when you start recording hd video, it eats up space rather quickly.
-
I have a 160GB drive on my laptop with tons of space left, and a brand new Samsung Spinpoint F4 320GB drive in my desktop. Neither of these really hold anything more than programs. Everything gets offloaded to duplicate external USB drives. While I don't have everything at my fingertips anymore by not having internal drives, now everything is very portable and secure and I can just as easily use it with my laptop as with my desktop, or just store it in my closet.
-
I run 500gb in my notebook and Im struggling keeping it 30% empty... more over I have 2 X 1TB externals and 1 320gb external all loaded.... I need 2tb portable drives
-
If you have no backup strategy or just hoard crap you'll never look at again regardless, NO amount of hard space will EVER be enough.
With the high-capacity broadband connections these days... hypothetically if I'd downloaded all Scrubs eps ever, and having watched them all I decided I wanted to watch one again (fat chance) I'll just redownload it. Of course I'd keep the eps with the really funny stuff (e.g. the one with the 12 days of Xmas tune on it) but not all 25Gb. Hypothetically.
Patches/mods etc. get burned to DVD. Much easier to catalog - external HDDs aren't big enough to write on and once you have >3 it's pretty hairy trying to remember what's on which. -
I use to be just fine with 80GB 3-4 years ago.Now anything less than 500 make me uneasy.

My hard drive has 130GB used space with Windows and programs installed; I have about 90GB of actual data. I would feel comfortable with a 250GB hard drive, though all of my computers have 500GB+ drives.

My Main laptop has a 60GB ssd with 8Gb free ATM, but a good chunk of that is taken up by visual studio, wubi, and starcraft 2. I also have a 500GB in that laptop for media, steam, etc.
My Mac Mini has an 80GB SSD with something like 20GB free since thats my dev machine, and it also has a 250GB, 1TB, and 750GB External drives as well for pictures, media, and time machine. My desktop has something like 4TB in it at the moment, and I think I have 1TB free over all the disks since its a dev, gaming, and media machine. Doesn't help that steam itself is taking up a terabyte though -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
My U30Jc has an Inferno 100GB SSD with around 70GB used (almost all OS/apps). This is my 'digital notebook' and the lightest capacity I'm currently forced to use. Love the long battery life, powerful (enough) cpu/gpu and especially the robustness of the (too small) HD.
My VAIO has an 500GB Momentus XT Hybrid and it's almost 85% full.
One desktop has 8 HD's (over 9TB total) and a portion of the backup drives number over 30 HD's (over 30TB total storage).
Doesn't help that each time I hold the shutter button down for a couple of seconds burst I generate over a GB of new data to store...
So, to answer your question; you can never have enough data storage - ever. You can only try to keep up (and, keep 'backed up' too). -
-
Backups rely more on habit and/or automation than the actual method. There are better and worse practices, but the distinction is irrelevant if you don't do it.
There is a worst case scenario though:
"Sorry your hard drive is toast and I can't get your files off."
"Why not?! I want my files back! I back them up every week!"
"Where?"
"To the hard drive! I even made another partition for my backups!"
"Which drive?"
"The one you're holding"
"..." [cry] -
I have a 160 GB SSD drive. It more than enough for my type of use because i delete the games and programs i dont use. My SSD is like my house: Everything must be clean and in order
I do have an external 500 GB HDD where i occasionally put movies and music worth storing. But i rarely use it anymore. -
hmm strange, i'm the only one who's good with 320?
-
I don't really have whole libraries' worth of fullHD movies or downloaded ebooks and my music folder isn't that huge therefore 500GB is good enough for me
So 500GB laptop HDD with a 500GB external to back up the files. Another 500GB on the desktop as an extra copy.
I'm going to buy another external or set up a home server for my design projects at school though. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
12GB EEE 901 (1 year)
40GB Inspiron 9100 (4-5 years)
500 GB Asus 3810T (1 year)
160GB Asus 1830T (current)
I prefer to have at least 160GB, but have lived with less. -
depends on what the machine does .... I have laptops running anything from 80GB to 2T
-
I still have a 2.5GB desktop HDD in use at home
How many GB's do you feel comfy with
