Just out of curiosity how many laptops/notebook PC's do you own? Tablets don't count, unless they're convertible to a laptop. If you're a parent that bought one for your kids, or spouse, count them too.

I only own one, my E425, as I don't have the funds to buy anything else. :( For most of what I do, its enough but I'm so tempted by all the new and shiny laptops that keep coming out with all the bells and whistles I wish I had. I guess I'll have to just settle for a $38.88 Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to get the most out of what I already have.

you have an m6700, Charles has an 8740w ;) but I may have to add the husbands and kids laptops to the list. How about I update the sig tonight or tomorrow.

as for my serious firepower that's my render station that belongs on DTR, finally dropped the cash to upgrade to 512GB of RAM.
that unit however is OT :)

After doing a count, apparently, I own more than expected.

    • 2007 Dell Inspiron E1405 (XP) - for stuff that won't play nice with Vista and newer
    • 2009 Acer AOA150 netbook (XP) - my netbook
    • 2009 Acer AOA150 netbook (XP) - brother's netbook (I'm the tech buyer in the family)
    • 2009 Asus UL30A-X5 (7 x86-64) - primary laptop, replaced an older Toshiba satellite Vista laptop which I gave to my cousin
    • 2009 Fujitsu Lifebook P1620 (Vista x86) - convertible tablet
    • 2012 Asus U36SG-AS71 (7 x64) - was supposed to be the UL30A replacement until I realized I'd have to take it apart to replace the HDD with SSD. Need to figure out what to do with it since it's out of the return period.
    • 2012 Asus U31SG-DS31 (7 x64) - UL30A replacement
    • 2012 Asus U31SG-DS31 (7 x64) - brother's Acer AOA150 replacement

The U31SG's are still in their boxes. Haven't had the time or inclination to set them up yet. Didn't realize I had that many laptops. We'll probably be giving away the netbooks and the UL30A to family once the new laptops have been properly set-up, though.

Ah, collecting like old cell phones huh? I shutter to a ask how many of those you have tucked away in a drawer.

Only the one for me, but never more than two at a time. I finally got rid of my old Dell Inspiron since it could do anything other than search the web. The account still needs a bit more boosting before I can update to my next unit.

I have one laptop. 2007 Dell Inspiron. Despite being 5 years old, I don't feel like I need to rush out and buy a new one. It still works as good as it did new (better, actually, since it doesn't have Vista anymore). I have a late-2011 desktop for anything requiring more power, but when I am using the laptop for whatever reason, it's usually snappy enough.

I'm hopefully it'll last another 5 years, and since its GPU hasn't failed, I think it has a decent chance at it (knock on wood). While it may well come to be that I do end up buying another laptop at some point... it'd be nice to do so only when I decide to and not because it conks out and I'm traveling. Though, at some point I might upgrade it to Windows Nine or whatever the latest is at that time. XP works great for now, and was a big upgrade from Vista, but in a year or two it might be a bit long in the tooth.

Also, though somewhat interesting, the poll might provide more insight with more detail, such as how old they are/how long they've been collecting. There's a difference between having 6 laptops and getting the first one three years ago, and having 6 laptops and they date back to when the Soviet Union still existed. Given my slowly-growing collection of two out-of-date and less-than-fully-operational cell phones, I might have 6 laptops in 20 years myself.

512 GB??? That's a ridiculous amount of RAM. I remember having 512 MB not that long ago. Even Weird Al Yankovic doesn't have that much RAM.

Also, is there actual activity on DTR? I never joined because at first I didn't have a desktop, and also, it looked like no one was there after the first few weeks.

Knowing what KCETech1 does, it's not surprising, heck, while i don't need 512GB, i can think of a few cases where it could come in handy, think of it as having your own personal cluster (her rig likely has four 8 or 16 core CPUs too).

    Currently 2:

A 2011 Dell XPS15R2...my main notebook, used for everything but traveling for my research
A 2010 Acer 1810T, bought it for my phd, as I needed something small for the travels, but powerful enough to compile smaller c++ apps. It is the ultimate notebook for the road...7h battery life and integrated 3G and its small enough to use it in economy on narrowbody aircraft.
The really annoying thing is that they don't build them this way, you can get much more power, but there is no 11" with more than 5h battery life...because a 5600mAh battery won't fit in a 11" chassis under 25-27mm, so you only get a 3500mAh battery....

    HP Envy 14t

    Asus Zenbook UX32VD

    Dell XPS 15 L521x

I also have an Asus Transformer Infinity TF700 with a keyboard dock.

1st Sony $2500 laptop in 1999 - broke just after the 1 year warranty was over.

2nd laptop - Feb 2006 - Dell E1705 with 7800 Go and 1920 x 1200 screen, was my main computer until I built a desktop in Dec 2008. Since laptop video cards cannot match the power of desktop video cards, I now only game on powerful desktops.

3rd laptop - backup Dell E1705 with a 7900 go video card and 1920 x 1200 screen. Bought from ebay for around $360

I don't use laptops much nowadays... Only for browsing the web and emails while traveling or on vacation and for car GPS with MS Streets & Trips 2011. So I can wait 2 years more to buy a new powerful laptop, but Haswell and a Geforce 7xx series would be very tempting. My 7 year old laptops fullfill my needs, plus they don't make 1920 x 1200 laptops screens anymore!
