How many of you dropped a latop ? spilled something on it ? Did it survive ? Which model ?
I dropped my inspiron 5000 from a 2 feet high - the screen cover got a bit cracked, but the laptop has been working fine.

I'm using computers heavily, every day and approx. 6hrs/day... and the only time I spilled some apple-juice or whatever it was on my keyboard was like 10 yrs ago! but if you are clumsy it -will- be different
never dropped a notebook though, I mean why should one drop something like that.. it won't easily happen since you know that you are ****ed if you drop it.. I'm using notebooks regulary at office and while traveling and giving presentations.. never ever dropped it - it's not like a key that you are throw up in the air to catch and then occasionally let drop^^
so don't worry.. -
i play catch with mine though so just make sure you pick non-clumsy fetchers :-F

hey I bet that would be a great yuppie-and-spoild-childs game: rugby with a $5000 notebook as the ball

My cat jumped on the table once and knocked a cup of water all over my old Inspiron 3500. I let it dry out for a day and it has worked fine ever since.
-
the spills and drops are subject to luck. Ive dropped a laptop from 1foot and it damaged the harddrive. Ive dropped one from 3ft and no problems aside from a chipped corner.
-
Dropped Dell Inspiron 6000 3 feet from the couch to the floor. Nothing happened.
Haven't dropped my new computer, yet: D620 -
Never dropped one ... I will cry if I did.

I think it depends a lot on the angle it hits at. If it seems to be working fine you might want to just use a program to test the hd for bad sectors. Also, virtually all laptops now come with a "spll guard" in the keyboard so if you get some liquid in, it probably won't mess up your machine.

My Inspiron 700m was dropped from the desk to the concrete floor in Guetemala hotel. The guy who served me a drink accedently pull the power cord. Got lucky though, there were some scratches on the lids but nothing broke. Still using it when I travel, but thinking about hand it down to my brother, if I decide to put Merom in my M90, and put together a barebone (Compel or Asus) with Core Duo.

Still haven't dropped my Inspiron 6000 yet after 11 months

Oh man, I was using my roomates Toshiba A105 laptop late at night. I spelled like half full cup of water right on the keyboard, the thing was soaked in water. But, I immediatly flipped the laptop and disconnected the battery. I was praying that the keyboard was spill proof, but when I opened the harddrive & memory panels, they were soaked in water too
I let it dry for 2 hours, put it infront of a big fan. When I tried to start it up, it made some beeps, then shut down. I was like FTW am I gonna say to my roomate now. But I let it dry for half an hour and turned it on and it ran with no problem. But, the C partition was screwed, I couldn't boot to that partition. The D partition however was OK. So, I had to reinstall windows and everything is working great now
It was a nightmare, I hate when this happens. -
I spilled Dr Pepper on my Toshiba. It completely fried the thing, but after a year I decided to pull it out and see if it would work. Surprisingly it did - somewhat. It booted and stayed on for 5 minutes. Then would crash. I ended up taking the HDD out and got all of my stuff off of it though.
Since we are all talking about different manufacturers, I'm going to move this to the hardware section so other users can join in on the fun. -
Dropped an Inspiron 3500 (while in its case, I believe) from about 2 feet. Just minor cosmetic plastic cracked...Warranty actually covered fixing the most obvious crack.
Hehe, the only thing I got out of that 3-year, $300+ warranty.
I'm sure mine would still do fine today if not for the terribly outdated components. PII 400 mhz, 128 MB RAM, 10 GB HD, DVD/Floppy/Zip...state of the art circa 1999. -
my old 600m (before it died for other reasons last month) was run over by a kiddie tricycle by my kid sister - in the living room. I was surprised by how the whole thing survived. Just a hairline crack on the side, and the LCD had a thick area of blackened (not dead) pixels on the side.

Ex roommate was using 2 year old Sony Vaio as an MP3 jukebox at a keg party (dumb). Someone dropped a whole cup of beer on it. The machine was pronounced dead after 12 hours of drying.
6 months later it booted up, and has run fine since! -
I accidently have dropped my ThinkPad a few times and it still works and everything is fine, and I also once spilled something on my ThinkPad's keyboard and it was still working.
-
I dropped my Compaq 1720US a couple of times from maybe 2-3ft up. No problems...but like most others a chip broke off the shell.
-
4 times with my hp and 4 new hardrives LOL

I have never dropped or spilled on a laptop. But I remeber back a long time ago I was joking around with my grandpa(before his heart and knee surgery) and he tripped me and I fell on my laptop bag. So I basically sat on my old 80486 laptop(told you this was a long time ago). Everything was fine minus the screen was totalled. He bought me a new screen, and bam back in business.
Other then that I have never goofed a lappy, although I have seen my freind spill a 40oz beer and almost a 1/5th of jim beam on his(two different occasions, same lappy). -
I dropped my Toshiba A105 on a tiled wet floor after it was mopped, and suprisingly nothing happened at all.
-
i dropped my toshiba once, the power cord caught between my toes as i took a step... fell about three feet and managed to land right side up (Still open) on a 4" thick softcover textbook. I was very thankful for that.

Lesson #1: Never let anyone but yourself use your laptop. -

Nope, I did tell him. He was sleeping at the time, he woke up while I was checking the hard drive & memory... was like whats going on. Because I was trying to remove the water with a vacumm. But we turned it on and it did boot to the D partition but not to the C partition. He just wanted to make sure everything was fine and all his files were still there after he saw that the sound, gfx, performance ..etc were OK. So, I booted it to the D partition and moved all of his files to an external HDD and formatted the thing. Everything is working OK as it was before this happened. -
I decided to test my 1210 with some major abuse since im getting sent a new one. I completely took it apart yesterday (I have an extra screw now...oh well) and re assembled it. Then I repeatidly dropped it at varrying hights and angles. I mostly dropped it on carped from about 3 feet high at a level release with the feet down. It still boots up and stuff, but it was already screwed up anyway. Google world worked then it crased with the old problem. The thing pretty solid.
[EDIT] Just dropped it from 4 ft high at a rough 45degree angle, made a loud klunk and stuff, but its still works. -
I've been usig my Dell Inspiron since 6 years. Hasn't got a single scratch on it. never dropped it, Never spilled anything on, Never hit it with something accidently....but I always use my lappy on my desk at home...no where else.
