    1280MB(256M+1GB) DDR2 533MHz(PC4200) on ThinkPad R52 1860-A33.

I use my laptop primarily for programming/development work and net surfing.
Commonly used applications are: Visual Studio 2005, NetBeans, Emacs, Vim,
Cygwin with X, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Opera, Media Player Classic
    and Oracle with JDeveloper.

Not more than 3-4 applications at one time, exclusing heavy background
    services like Oracle etc.

I'd say 1GB is enough for most. I only got 1.5GB because the 1GB stick was only ten dollars more. Me I run mostly Foxfire, Quintessential Pleyer, Nero, a little Photoshop and Office. Not really a power user.

    1GB.

More than enough for the normal use. FF, office, and some minor utilities.

When I am downloading torrents, I set the buffer to use most of my Ram to minimize disk access, which eats up everything. Also Matlab, due it being so fabulously well done, manages to take up 0.5GB alone and maybe more if I had any left.

I'm running 1GB as of tonight. Originally, I only had 512 MB. But my local store had 512 sticks on sale. So, I picked up a stick.

I usually run Office, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and some sort of media player. MSN Live Messenger is usually in the background.

2 GB in my N5010, and I routinely use around1.9-1.8 GB, particularly when modeling. I often run a model and work on some office docs, have email, music (amarok), and a few firefox tabs all at once. The modeling eats up most of it, and I have to go to the swap file pretty often, even in Linux. Then I know it's time to close some windows or simplify the model :)

512MB, with 2GB on the way.

basic office stuff, some games, some video/photo work, sw development, plus custom built highly quantitative apps with some large databases. More memory would be better, but for that I have to go to the desktop.

I have 512mb of RAM. But, I've heard that increasing RAM doesnt really increase processor speed, and I'm doing fine for now (I don't use that many apps at a time, maybe 3 or 4 at most) so I don't plan on buying more memory anytime soon. (Maybe a bigger HD, though).

I run mostly Matlab, WinEdt (LaTeX document editor), TheBat (email client), Opera (web Browser), WinAmp. I almost always have them all open and occasionally use a few other statistics & graphing packages, Foxit (pdf viewer) and MS Office apps.

run internet explorer (multiple windows), ms office, norton antivirus, msn messanger, philips device manager, windows media player, ms defender

at the time of writing this, in running internet, msn messanger, wmp, norton, and wondows defender.

when i play the halo trial, i can only run small things like internet and messanger while playing, otherwise there is LOTS of lag....

I have 1 GB, and I wouldn't mind doubling that in the future if there really is a significant perfomance gain. After all, speed is determined by various factors, and so something like a "slower" 5400 RM hard drive, a single core processor, or GMA graphics could mean that you can't make full use of the 2 GB.

I run all kinds of applications from video editing through photoshop through TOCA 3. And honestly, I'm happy :D

1Gb I would like more but atm. I can handle. Any lappy with less than 1GB will not do good for gaming purposes :)

I use Office, Magix Movie Edit pro 10, Games (Guild Wars, Half-Life 2)

Depends on what an apps is for You. In my opinion an app is something I installed besides what windows installs and uses. And that will be:

Zonaalarm, AVG, RM, Messenger, and either a game or something else such as office/IE/Outlook

2GB, not taking any chances this time. I suffered with 512 for the longest time but no more!

I have 1GB, use Internet Explorer and use about 2-3 applications at one time. Not bad for a laptp that cost £599! (about $800)
