I know I could just look at Newegg or wherever, but I honestly don't know which is good and what isn't brand wise.
I have the option to upgrade to 2GB for $25, could I get a better deal elsewhere? Or is that a good price for 2GB. May not sound like much, but I'm trying to keep things as cheap as possible at the moment.
Also, would you go with a 2GB stick or 2 1GB sticks?
Thx.

1 2GB stick. That way it will be cheaper to upgrade to 3 or 4GB later.
-
there is a lot of good prices on ebay, with some good credible sources.
still that is a v cheap price, for uk at least. -
Ram Deals!
-
if you can find some 'dearer than UK' prices, now that would be something special. -
I thought it was a good idea to do 2x1GB to get dual channel capability.
-
dual channel ram was desired on old athlon systems.
now days, it gives minimal performance increase. It's better to go for upgradability. -
Ah. That's reasonable. Thanks.

I just picked up 4gb ddr2 pc5400 for $48
Newegg has a $20 rebate on OCZ memory.
Get it before the sale ends tomorrow night.

Live and learn from the Grimster. My knowledge undeniable. -
Yeah okay grimster,
actually dual channel offers less than a 3% performance boost.

K-Tron, I dont think you understand how graphic works. When you have integrated graphics and try to run 3D you NEED dual channel. Using single channel is the same as getting a cheap graphics card with 64bit memory interface. Everyone knows 64bit memory interface for 3D graphics cards SUCKS. This is the EXACT same situation with integrated graphics. Single channel would offer 64bit width and thats SHARED with the CPU. Dual channel would double that to 128bit which would double the bandwidth and and the gains are BIG. Please do some research before questioning my knowledge as you obviously do not understand how memory width and bandwidth are related to 3D graphics processing. Thank you.
Again this has LOOOOOOONG been proven back when the GMA950 graphics were release. Where have you been? From what I remember the 3d benchmark scores on integrated graphics were 30% higher with dual channel. THATS how vital that extra memory bandwidth is as system memory is slow to begin with compared to graphics card mem. I will find the exact scores and post them. -
Dont give me that bs, back it up with benchmarks man. You are not going to find a single benchmark which shows a 100% performance gain in video or memory bandwidth from dual channel technology.
Any synthetic benchmark will show a very minimal increase in memory bandwidth when running in dual channel.
Even in 3d marks, you will see that the gpu will not score much better with 2 x 1gb cards over a single 1 x 2gb card.
Plus now that youre off topic, since you usally do, the man wanted to know how much memory costs.
The answer is that 2gb of memory can be had for about $30 and 4Gb can be had for about $60.

Just ran 3Dmark2001se on my Dell d630 with integrated graphics.
1.8ghz C2D
2gb ram
3dmark2001se
Scores
1 x 1gb single channel - 3025
2 x 512mb dual channel - 4400
You do the math.... -
-
I think grimster's right to some extent, I mean more bandwidth is definitely better.
But bear in mind that IGPs aren't good at gaming at all. and the performance increase from more bandwidth, maybe 3 more fps? -
-
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
True your score did in fact go up but that does not mean that CS or WoW will have a 45% increase in fps on an IGP. -
How much does 2GB of RAM cost?
