I would say you would probably do just great with a total of 3 GB of Ram on Vista 32 bit. (Or XP 32 bit.)

If you are going for Vista 64 bit, then 4 GB would be fine. (You could also get this much ram for 32 bit, but it won't be able to use all of this. It'd be a bit of a waste.)

3-4gb of memory is fine, their is no need for more memory than that.
Also, do not buy into ddr3 memory, it is super overpriced and not worth it at all.
Pc5300 or Pc6400 ddr2 memory clocked at 667Mhz or 800Mhz respectively, will suit you just fine.

ddr3 memory sodimms are available in some sony models, dont pay the ridiculous some of money for it, since you will not notice any performance differance at all between ddr2 and ddr3 memory.

So Vista 32 bit uses 3.2GB right?

If one would have an integrated video card, like X4500, would that use memory in those 3.2GB or would it use memory of the left over 0.8?

If so, someone choosing IGP would better choose 4GB.

It might... or it might just borrow from the 3.2 GB that Vista can recognize. Simply because it's more of a knowing from software and not necessarily from hardware thing. (Borrowing from what it can see, that is.)

I'm not sure that choosing 4 GB with integrated would necessarily give you any boost and not just take away from the 3.2 GB.

Thank you for trying to answer my question. However, "it might or it might not" is not really the answer I'm looking for :)

    If anyone knows please post.

The other 0.8Gb will be set aside for other system components to use, like the integrated graphics, and the other inner components which need some memory.

I have came to this conclusion because my bro has a integrated gpu in his laptop. He had 3gb of memory, which was the maximum the system could read, and his 3dmark score increased a lot by going with 4gb, so the other 1gb which could not be addressed by the operating system is being put to use.
