Download and run CPU-Z and see if you can get the chipset that you have. The 910 chipset can only handle 2GB of RAM I believe, whereas the 915 can hold 4GB if the manufacturer BIOS support it.

is it this laptop that u have? http://www.nec-computers.com.my/Products/Product_Specs.asp?CID=4&RangeID=6&CatID=12&ModID=270
if it is then it should be 3GB of ram 'cos it has the Intel® 945PM Chipset.
u can install 2x2GB of ram in it and it should boot but it won't see the entire 4th GB; you'll only end up with around 3.2GB~ or there abouts. -
Yer thats my laptop so that means if i take 512 out and add a 2 gb so i have 3 it willl work fine?
-
yeah. should work. i have a dv9008tx laptop here that uses the i945pm chipset and i am currently running 3GB of ram in 1x1GB + 1x2GB configuration.

i have read both that the 945pm/gm chipset can show all 4gb of memory (in 64bit windows) and also that it only shows 3gb even in a 64bit windows
can anyone confirm that it can hold 4gb?
i have the dv2500t and running 4gb of memory and can see it all in 64bit windows. HP sais it won't allow it but the chipset allows it so it works. the 945pm/gm also allows 4gb but peope still say there seomthign wrong with it
any info will always help -

Those whitepapers may have been written before any 64-bit OS's were finalized.. could be that 4gb works fine with a new enough bios (older bioses may limit) and a 64-bit OS.
edit
This post describes the i945 chipsets limits well.

i'm glad Pitabred found out that it is in fact a hardware limitation and no amount of BIOS update will allow it to see 4GB. From the very beginning i was told (read from threads) that its a limitation of the controller, but didn't have prove of it. -

whitepapers usually always have outdated information since they come out months before the technology is even officially released. They are available to the public only afterwards in most cases though.
