    1. How much of a percentage should I overprovision?

    2. Should I use that percentage against 512gb or the actual 477gb that I'm getting on the drive during the Windows 8 install?

    1) I recommend 30%, if you think that's too much, then OP by at least 20%

    2) Calculate 80% of your actual available disk size.... so...477 GB x 0.7 = (30% OP) means your partition should be 333 GB

OP according to your needs. If mainly for storage then no OP or 7-10% at most. If as OS/apps, etc I would do 12-15% mainly to keep it from filling up the entire drive to maintain performance, if for intense writing (i.e. video processing on a regular basis) then 30%. It doesn't need to be that exact. If a 512GB drive, in Windows it will be about 476GB, so OP according to that.

Tilleroftheearth will probably pipe in and say 30-50% no matter what...
