I only use my optical drive when Im a) formatting and setting up a computer b) installing software that came on a CD or DVD (very rare these days) or c) backing up my DVDs and loading them to my HDD (bought DVDs and I do NOT give or sell copies of my backup).

I have removed it. Gives good aeration + gives a 'handle' to hold the laptop when moving it :O)

Am using the OD maybe a few times pr. year, need to have one available. Future laptop will be with an OD, but will swap it for an xtra HD.

The only times I use a ODD while mobile is if a certain game/music album was cheaper in a physical disc format, often that is once a month or less on my notebooks. Generally I use the ODD on a desktop often, I frequently burn Linux/Unix discs for broadbandless users.

As far as the ODD in my notebooks:
Thinkpad T61 Widescreen(Vista): Went with a HDD bay to replace the ODD... I carry a USB Multiburner for the rare need of a drive.
MacBook Pro: ODD was removed in late-2011, allows me to have separate HDDs for Snow Leopard and Lion :D

    LOL @ HAL.

Put it this way, my Logitech mouse's and phone's charging stations are right in front of the ODD's tray door. Imagine what would happen if that ODD tray ever ejected outward? *shiver*

Even when I buy games in physical format I end up entering the CD key in Steam/Origin instead of installing it directly from the disc.
Good thing ODDs found in laptops don't open in a motorized way, like those found in desktops. If they did they would prove to be a neat way of tidying desks. :p

I've been saying this for years. ODD's shouldn't be part of any notebook. Have you seen the space it occupies? It's just HUGE! Imagine what it would be like to use that space for other things like making smaller or much better thermal dissipation, more I/O ports. Anyone can use an ODD via usb.
Sure a smart bay is nice but I don't understand why manufacturers don't implement it more times. It's not like is expensive or anything.
It's like hotswap battery capability. Is it so hard to implement?

My dv4's DVD-RAM drive does get use once in a while. I haven't been able to buy a 1TB USB3 external HDD because of the 2011-present elevated pricing, so I've been using DVD-Rs for backup.

Would love to use that drive bay to carry an SSD, though. My household's WinXP Q6600 desktop rig uses an Intel X25-V as a boot drive, and I miss how lightning-fast it gets going from a cold boot. The dv4 has only one HDD bay, and populating that with a 256GB or 512GB SSD will easily cost me 2/3 the cost of the laptop!

Most media and movies are Loss leaders for the places that sell them. The usually only make a small percentage.. or even lose money on some titles. They are seen as a draw to the store so the customers will buy other items.

Only when the discs are marked up to full MSRP do they make any actual profit on them.
