Right, so I have a small budget to upgrade my e1505 core duo (from 2006), and am wondering what would be best. I am hoping some of you can help me make sure that what I buy will work in the machine. Here is the output of lshw: View attachment spec.txt

Obviously I will get RAM and a cpu upgrade, but what is the maximum RAM that I can make use of? And what is the best Core 2 duo that will fit my board?

Is it worth getting a graphics card if I don't do any gaming?

Is there any way I can enable VT-x, or has Dell irrevocably locked that out?

    Any other advice...?

Thank you in advance? I hope someone doesn't mind helping me out.

The E1505/6400 should be able to take up to 4GB of RAM and up to the T7600. Wouldn't really recommend the T7600, though; T7200 or T7400 is a much better value. If you have integrated graphics, you can't update the GPU without replacing the motherboard. If you have discrete graphics, all of the dGPUs offered in the E1505/6400 are more or less equally bad, so there isn't much of a point.

Not too sure about the VT-x settings in BIOS. I'll see if I can take a look.

Thank you Commander for the quick reply! This was exactly the info I needed.

I was surprised that the prices for the core 2's are as high as they are, but I suppose it's a good sign that they're still valuable. Not really in my budget though, except I found this from China: Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7200 SKT M 2.00/4M/667 SL9SF | eBay Too good to be true, do you think, or should I go for it??

Regarding RAM, if I stick with my T2400 cpu (32 bit) then I'll just get a pair of 1gb sticks. If I got the 7200, I might be tempted to get 2x 2gb... I suppose after all that I'll have a battery life of, what, about 10 minutes?!

Anyone else want to chime in? With a budget of, say, £80, what would you do??
