Specifically, the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ compared to other processors... or to my old P4 2.60ghz? Would it run fine for lets say... 4 years?

Wouldn't that depend entirely on what you wanted to run on it?

Even a celeron would have enough power for windows vista. Its actually the speed of the hard drive that makes a noticeable performance difference.

The Mobile Semprons are decent for general tasks and are pretty close in performance to my Athlon 64 in that respect. If your current P4 is in a notebook, you will notice an increase in battery life as the Semprons have a 25-watt rating as opposed to 70+.

As for it lasting four years, I guess it could if just used for minimal tasks where quick performance is not the deciding factor. My 700Mhz P3 is still running stuff today, but it is very slow compared to today's offerings.

I have p2's sitting in a closet, run good, slower than bugger growth, still work great though. Most people dont upgrade when thier cpu dies. They upgrade cause the cost value relationship vs speed favors it. I have a 800mhz that I used for 6 years, now my mom uses it to check email and surf for cooking recipes. She thinks its totally rocks (compared the p2 she had thats now in my closet). When I "outgrow" a system I try to pass it on to a friend or family member, call it recycling or just perfer to email my mom than have to talk to her on the phone. GL
