This may be a bit late but..... :D
Norton has a utility on thier website that completely removes Norton from your system. Add/remove programs doesn't get rid of everything.

    Try this link

    That's the ultimate question.

I'd give more than $1 if someone like Bootleg2go/Jack would start a new thread about how to optimze a Vista system.

I have serious trepidation about trusting tech advice posted in 2004.

Guys, I play a lot of games on my notebook but I don't know how much Page File I should allocate to Vista. What should I set the Initial and Maximum sizes to? I have 2GB of RAM.

I've read that I should set it to the same amount otherwise your system could have performance problems 'switching' (for a lack of a better word) between sizes.

    What are your inputs?

    Thanks :)

dsam...Just leave it to determine the size of pagefile itself...you will be fine.

I noticed a number of people looking for a specific Vista tweak thread...

See below. I am getting 1500 hits a day still.

MAN SHOULD I DO THE BUCK TIP JAR THING TOO???

    Hey all,

If you really want to check out whats running on your startup list, check out CastleCops instead of the listed place in the "Clear Out Memory Resident Programs That are not Needed" section.

    http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

Castlecops.com has almost every startup item listed you can imagine, and it gives you tips as to what it is, whether its necessary, or whether its up to the users personal preference as to keep the startup item or not.

I've been using it for 3 years now and never have had an issue with their suggestions.

    Enjoy!

I just found this thread for the first time and noticed that it is a few years old. How much of the information contained in the original post still applies? I just want to be sure that the information is still relevant, as I find it very helpful and would like to apply some of the suggestions.

    Very Nice,

I do disagree with paying for the defrag tool.

JkDefrag is a quality defrag tool that is based the the Windows API and works much better than the Windows defrag tool and the professional versions.

It places your boot up files on the outside of the disk for a quicker boot.
It re-magnitizes the hard disk in one mode. Thus keeping your Hard Drive healthy.
It puts the big file hogs that are not used much in a place where they do not slow down the regular everyday used file.

It also leaves gaps between files you update regularly so they do not fragment when you add a new document/file etc.

This is well worth the free download. Why pay out of your pocket when the Open Source is free and better many times than the pay products!

    Blessings,
    Chetanji

Let me add one serious item to the excellent document above.

If you are not confident in editing your Registry then DO NOT let some program mess things up for you.

Even if the registry clean program doesn't cause a serious problem immediately, they will usually cause a problem only recognized later, because you don't use all your programs, the same way every day.

By the time you run the program tampered with, you will probably have forgotten about the registry 'clean' you did.

I learned the hard way with friends and clients that have done this very thing.

Question we can all relate with...
How many times have you run a program you found on the Web, for the first time, only to think strongly afterwards,"Good God, I wish I would have never done that. I sure won't do something stupid like that again!"

Registry clean programs; and processor updates without extensive checking to make sure you need it; bios and firmware flashing without checking versions, etc. You need to be very careful about who comes into the front door. Only God knows what comes in the back door, and that's why a good quality Pay antivirus program should be used.

    Blessings,
    Chetanji

Another thing is that turning off Windows services does very little actually. You will find it does not increase performance noticeably and might make your Windows experience worse. Of course there are some services like Remote Registry that can be turned off for security reasons.

CCleaner is just an awesome program, and I use it everyday. I think CCleaner is one of the best free Windows programs of all time.

I followed the links given in this guide and removed some of the startup programs and disabled some starting services. I have completely lost the audio in my laptop and not even able to make any calls through skype (getting an error "problem with playback device"). It looks like I disabled some program that I am not supposed to  I have attached the screen shots of all the services. Can someone please let help find the wrong ones? (I am using a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows Mediacenter Home Edition) Thanks a lot.
