    Hi
I am about to buy a zd8214 laptop from HP.The problem is that HP made the mistake to go backwards and place a Pentium 4 in 3Ghz instead of 3.2.Does anybody know how to upgrade the processor, ram and the GPU?I also want to know if it is possible to install Wi-fi in a laptop that doesn't come with wi-fi packed in.
    Thanx

Generally upgrading the ram is easy there should be one cover that your remove and you can get access directly to the ram. On most laptops you cannot upgrade the CPU or GPU and doing so would definitly void your warrenty. You can install wi-fi either though a usb connection, or PCIMCA card.

The maintainance & Service guide for the zd8000 lists the procedure involved in removing & replacing the processor as well as the RAM & WiFi card....

With HP I suggest getting the laptop with your Wifi card as they have BIOS locked non HP cards which means that non HP certified cards wont work with the laptop.

The GPU is not upgradable as it most probably is soldered on to the motherboard.

The RAM is very easy to upgrade, just remove a few screws on the bottom of the laptop, open the door, and the RAM DIMM slots should be there. Just slap in your new sticks. ;)

The CPU is more difficult but far from impossible. HP's guide PDF's are pretty good.

As far as the GPU goes, I believe that it is integrated into the motherboard, so it's non-upgradeable. :(

I know that it's easy upgrading the ram but the seller told me that it's gonna void the warranty.I changed my mind and I am gona buy the Fujitsu Siemens M3438Gl1 which comes with wi-fi and a good video card.I want to change the CPU and the ram.First do you know if this gonna void the warranty and how much does it cost to do so?

Changing the CPU most probably will void the warranty, RAM might not unless if one of the slots is under the keyboard which will require disassembly of the laptop.

i agree with miner i work at a computer store and the minute u even as much touch the stuff on the board of laptops when they are under the regular 1 yr warranty, ur warranty will be void.and as for wifi, just buy a PCIMCA card or a usb adapter which ever one you want that will do the trick be aware that you still do need a router to connect to the internet.

Hey cool.. is it really possible to change the CPU on laptops? What i know that it is impossible to change the GPU, quite possible to change the wireless chip, very easy to change the HDD and the ram (which i did). Is it specific to some laptops that the CPU can be changed? In other words, can a TM3200's CPU be changed?

Yes, It all depends on the manufacturer, in your case I guess you"ll have to have a look at the socket and check to see whether it is soldered on or not. Older laptops generally had soldered cpu's, most newer ones have socketed cpu's which can be changed.

On my Acer(Aspire 3000) it frankly is too easy :D (just matter of removing the a cover & heatsink!)
