As the title suggests, I'm trying to connect my digital satellite box, TV, and surround system in a way that makes it possible (if it's possible at all...) to get sound through the speakers of the surround system when I connect my notebook via HDMI.

    My current config:
TV <-> Sound system via HDMI
TV <-> Satellite box via HDMI
Satellite box <-> Sound system via optical cable for 5.1 sound

When I connect my notebook via HDMI to the TV, I only get sound through the TV speakers and not through the sound system. I don't know if the HDMI connection on the notebook carries 5.1 sound but I have a 3.5mm jack which doubles as S/PDIF (optical) for 5.1 sound so I can use that if I should need it.

It looks like the easiest way would be to keep your current setup, get a S/PDIF switchbox, and hook your satellite box and and notebook through the switchbox to the sound system. Then, when you hook up your notebook to the TV, adjust your sound output device to use your S/PDIF output instead of the HDMI.

The issue here is that your sound system only takes audio in via S/PDIF, antenna, or RCA jacks; the HDMI is output only. Thus, if you want to put sound into your sound system, you need to use either S/PDIF, antenna, or RCA jacks... and S/PDIF would seem to be the easiest here.

Thanks! Then I'll buy a Toslink switch and a Toslink - Mini Toslink cable for the notebook.
