    Hello

I need to ship my optical disk drive for servicing and I would like to know if there is something I need to take care when dismantling the drive....

Can I use the laptop without the drive?

What should I do to disactivate it from the OS so that I can dismantle and use the laptop without thr optical disk drive?

    Thanks

You shouldn't need to change any settings in Windows. Just shut down and take it out, no different than unplugging a desktop optical drive or hard disk. Laptops don't need the optical drive to run.

The only thing that may happen without the drive is Windows takes an abnormally long time to load as it searches for the missing ide device, but this doesn't necessarily happen.

Simple fix if you do have this problem, just wait for Windows to load and go into 'Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> IDE Channel' and change 'Auto Detection' to 'None' for where the optical drive use to be. You would have to change it back once you get your drive. Again, this problem doesn't always happen so more than likely there won't be this issue.

Another idea is to make a call to Asus service center, make sure they let you do it yourself, then only bring the optical drive to them, otherwise, you have to send the whole unit to them for service.
Even you don't do anything in the Windows before taking it out, the windows will not be crashed. After taking it out, the BIOS will not detect any optical dirve anymore. Or You can uninstall the optical driver under the Windows before doing this.
