So help me out, how to I download these torrents? Or better yet how do I view them once I have downloaded what I want? Do I need any special device to view these?

[*note* the torrent file you download from a site is ONLY a file that will connect you to the tracker/peers of the torrent through a bittorrent client (like uTorrent) and not the actual file itself]
uTorrent is my favorite BT client. Quick clean and easy. but theres other clients too.
Hopefully this touches on everything you should need to get started:
1. So first go to www.uTorrent.com and download the installer (or .exe file) and run the application.
2. When you first open it, fill out the network settings to the ones that match your current setup/speeds.
*Note: Later on if you see that you have problems connecting to people/torrents go to PortForward.com
and just select your router and read the directions on the site from there on how to forward a port through your router. (make sure you match the port you forward on your uTorrent Network settings afterwards.)
3. Find the torrent and download/open the ".torrent" file with utorrent and you should be able to DOWNLOAD.
Also, you'll want to make sure to read comments from the page you get the torrent file from (if possible) and or check the "seed/peer" ratio before downloading a file. Some people will tell you if a file is fake or whether its real. -
try azureus.

Okay I downloaded Utorrent last night beta version. It was taking a while to download, and while it was taking awhile I tried to see if it was working. When I clicked play I could hear the audio (somewhat choppy) but there was not picture, just a skin changing colors. Any suggestions on what would have caused this or how to fix it?

what are you opening the file with?
google VLC and try downloading and opening it with that. (if you don't already have it)
also make sure your torrent is finished downloading to 100% or close before you expect to play it with its full quality.
As the whole idea of "Bit Torrent" you download a lot of bits and pieces of a file to make a whole one. The order in which you download those bits are random so your file wont be able to play as complete until later in its percentage completion. -
I was trying to open with meadia player.
-
1. Download a client like uTorrent or Azureus. (Of the two, I use the latter, but I've heard good things of both.)
2. Download the torrent file from somewhere. These files should generally be very small compared to the file you plan to download.
3. Open up that torrent and you should begin the download.
Your download speed not only depends on your internet connection but also the number of peers/seeders. Generally, the more people that seed, the faster download speed you get. The whole idea behind BT is that you recieve bits and pieces of information/file from other users and at the same time upload your own bits and pieces to other users. You really want to seed (letting the file continue to upload even after the download is finished) because some sites may restrict your ability to download if you leech far too much.
Just remember to download responsibly. -
i personally like bitcomet because I am so used to the interface and it automatically forwards ports if you have a router. utorrent has a great clean interface but you have to manually forward ports. Utorrent will still work if you don't set up the port forwarding, but your download speeds will definitely suffer.

If you have a video problem it's a codec issue
Personally I'd go with the K-Lite Codec Full Pack
Although CCCP seems to be popular as well -
I second utorrent too. Fast and lightweight.
-
Yep, I use uTorrent. Its really lightweight, as has been said. Easy to use as well, but I haven't tried any others, so I can't really compare and say.
-

It sounds to me that you tried to play the file before it was completely downloaded. In such a case, mostly the audio track will play as far as it has been downloaded. The video may or may not be played, depending upon whether its beginning had been downloaded. That's the most basic explanation.
-
id go with azureus...they have a new thing out called VUZE just upgraded to that, its really nice and easy and they have a homepage that lets you download all sorts of things from movieclips, & gameplay footage. I just watched some Call of Duty 4 gameplay footage looks pretty nice
-
Utorrent is the best IMO. Uses about 5 megs of ram, compoared to the 100+ that Azureus would use back when I used it...

bittornado.com
interface is very easy to use, does not have any advanced features like azerus does but is definately something to look over if you start out torrenting. Bittornado uses less then 5 megs if I recall, the interface is super-simple so I can't image the program using that much ram. -
utorrent gets my vote
-
Utorrent is the best. Fast, lightweight, not bloated at all. It offers all the features anyone who's just downloading really needs. It starts at like 400KB.
Azureus is horribly bloated and slow, not just in terms of memory usage, but because it's all Java as well. It doesn't get any faster speeds than utorrent in general, but it bogs your system down immensely.
Vuze, which is basically Azureus 3.0, is even worse. It doesn't offer any additional functionality over Azureus 2.5, but it adds a media shell for downloading random media that no one will really ever want to watch or download. And of course, this makes the program twice as bloated as it already was - and that's saying A LOT. Most people only ever use the last tab in Vuze which brings up the old Azureus interface. -
I hope the OP is not talking about downloading ILLEGAL copyrighted material...
-
hmmm VUZE doesnt bog anything down for me? i can surf or do whatever i want and its like its not even there... I use both VUZE and utorrent, i personally like VUZE but if your just starting out utorrent is much more simple

I really dont like VUZE I prefer the old az, but im used to it I just go to view -> advanced and its back to the way it was.
It has alot of tweak options for downloads so you can really maximise your speed. I couldnt find ways to do this in utorrent back in the day.
I can get over 1mb/s on az with a good torrent file. Plus it does use up more memory and stuff but thats what the memory is there for... so why not use it??
I can play games and have az going at the same time with no ill effects so it cant be that bad. -
CCCP is also a good video and audio codec pack.
-
uTorrent all the way. It is great to install on a Flash drive that makes everything portable. I does not get much better than that.
I have even seen a few game demos offered over the BitTorrent protocol. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
yeah torrents, and torrent clients are legal. Its the contents of a torrent file that could possibly be illegal.
-
In Canada downloading copyrighted material is legal a judge decreed in a court case a while back, uploading is another matter, but yeah I second the uTorrent nomination, especially if you have a weak system, but Azureus doesn't slow me down at all, and if it does just lower the refresh rate...
-
I've tried azureus, bitcomet, ABC, bittornado and utorrent.
IMHO, utorrent is the best - small and fast.
For viewing video, I use and recommend VLC and CCCP codecs. -
Make sure if your downloading illegal stuff...or questionable stuff...ensure you have Peerguardian 2 running. I'm not condoning downloading illegal warez, just saying make sure you use it if you do. The decision is ultimately his in the end, not ours.
-
I used to use BitLord...got the job done for me. I've since switched to a newsgroup though, and I haven't looked back. It's quite worth the monthly fee.

I like Azureus if I want to look at fancy pants downloading graphics (which is surprisingly often), and utorrent when I want to have any other programs at all open on my computer.
-
Why is my torrent speed MUCH MUCH slower on my brand new Vista laptop than my 4 year old XP desktop?? Does the speed differ by the OS??
I tried downloading from the same file using utorrent on both computers at the same time, and I just have to give up downloading on my laptop. I would love to be able to download things on it though. But, I've heard rumors that BT-ing on laptop can harm the laptop. Any truth behind it? -
I do not see how using bittorent can hurt a laptop (unless it's a virus), so I have to raise the BS flag. Maybe it's downloading slower on your laptop because you limited download speeds, or just are getting less seeders.
-
Anyone else here use Bitcomet? Im finding it to be very fast and reliable, but it does have a few bugs. Is this Azureus I keep hearing about worth checking out?
-
BitComet is universally banned by every private tracker because it's a swarm hog. Good clients: Azureus (earlier dev branch), uTorrent, Deluge, rtorrent
-
lol i used to use BitComet but am now trying utorrent on my laptop for a change.
-
same here...utorrent is simpler, gets the job done!
-
Yeah.... used to use BitComet before... till I tried utorrent!

If anybody is interested I use Azureus because it has limitless options/plugins, good strong support behind it and its easy to use.
I can get over 2mb/s download on a good torrent. I used to hear its a system hog and thats why people prefer X torrent client over Azureus but it uses almost no resources on my computer and its not even bleeding edge anymore so unless your computer is 5 years old I dont think thats a valid argument. -
I've been using uTorrent for months without any problems and have v1.7.7, it was fine a few days ago but I went to use it yesterday and Avast is reporting it as a Trojan won't let me open it, nor will Avast let me download v1.7.7 stable from uTorrent's own site. It no longer has the "u" icon next to it in the start menu and is just the generic Windows program icon now instead (the little window icon). Has anybody else come across this problem?
-
I'd suggest utorrent...
it's one of the clients which you can easily run in the background... azureus(vuze) tends to hog a lot of ram, so gaming or any resource-intensive task tend to get painful...
and i totally agree.. the only way in which bittorent clients can harm your computer, is through extensive hardware usage...
well... one should of course be aware of trojans, viruses and whatnot floating around in torrent networks...
just try to find a good torrent site and by reading users comments you'll find out pretty quick who uploads trustworthy things... stick to those and you should be fine
never used avast, but you should be able to set exceptions somewhere... just add utorrent.exe and you should be good to go
if you have to select a folder which is not going to be included in future scans, make sure that your download folder isn't a subfolder of utorrent(change that in the options menu) -
I found out it's reporting a false positive so will update my virus database manually because I believe Avast may have updated this already, failing that I'll add it to the exceptions list. -
good luck with that... the exception list should work anyway...
-
utorrent is just awesome. less than 1mb install and hassel free. just install and start downloading
-
I can't do torrents where I am - they got the network locked down so they don't work.
It's okay, I didn't want to download Linux anyway. -
-
I'll launch the linux torrents for fun because it raises flags. I dont like having the network being limited to certain things.
When I go home ever 2-3 weeks, I'll grab what I need. Right now I have the most up to date versions of my favorite Linuxes openSUSE and Ubuntu so I'm happy. -
hehe.. all right fair enough then
-
I can't download torrents and the peer to peer doesn't work at all.
I think that it's the administration which forbids the peer to peer.
If there's somebody who knows the solution I'll greatfull to him the rest of my life -
-
Guys,
Do not post link to torrent search engines/sites that contain copyright material(a post was deleted).
Also, as mentioned, NBR does not allow the discussion on how to bypass security measures like admin restriction since they are there for a reason.

I used to use Azuerus but then tried uTorrent and i have to say that i prefer uTorrent a lot more!

Im still a Az person, it lets me tweak every little aspect of how it works to be perfect for my system.
Plus now and then the new Vuze has a clip on the main page that I would have never found that I will download.
I have my seed set to 120% so I will seed any file I d/l till I share 20% more than I downloaded, this was great because I am not a leech, but I also dont like leaving my computer uploading data for 4 days in a row like I used too and kill my HDD. If everybody did 120% we could download files 50x faster and not have trouble getting them, or worst yet getting 99% of a file and never that last 1%.
I could set my max downloads, max connections, ect.
Im sure other clients let you do most of this to some extent but Az makes it easy and has all the plugins for it to make it even better. It may be the biggest resource hog of them all, but we are talking what 5% of my ram and 1% of my cpu on my old computer.... thats not hurting anything and unused resources are just waisted ones.
