#1 is the OS, I think, and i dont see any way to slide it out or remove it, it is pretty firmly attached. There are 2 prongs on one end but not sure if those are what is holding it in place. there are 4 screws on the sides but they are below the level of the plastic and I would need to remove the bottom cover to access them. If i need to do that, is there a trick? This is a dv9420us.

Yes, as you figured out just hold onto the semi-transparent plastic tab and what I do is use a small flat blade screw driver and gently insert under the tabs where the screw holes are and gently work the screw driver back and forth until the drive is loose. Usually the first time it is removed the drive fits extremely tight and is difficult to remove. Subsequent removals are easier.

Remember that the drive, when removed, has a plastic piece (adapter) that fits over the pins on the end. You will need to take that piece off and put in on your new drive before you install it.

Lots of people, the first time they replace the drive, ask why the new drive has a different configuration for the pins. It doesn't, but they don't realize there is an adapter attached to the old drive and has to be transfered to the new drive,
