Anybody know any DIY website show me the way to replace a new harddisk for notebook please? my friend use very old laptop and it's fine but she only want to replace her harddisk from 40gb to 80 or 100gb. her model is Acer Travelmate and I'm certainly sure that her warranty is already expires. Well, is it ok to replace harddisk? or it's complicate and I should recommend her to purchase the new laptop instead.

however, even it's old but she use only word processing and surf internet. That machine still suite for her.

    Thanks..

It is usallyfairly easy. Pop a screw or two off the bottom and take the drive out and put the new one in. You have to re-install Windows. Which models is it?

    Thanks for all replys.

My friend use Acer Travelmate 290 I think. It's a 2 years ago model but I bet that the harddisk is IDE and I still can purchase it somewhere.

Well, the problem is that I'm not sure how the bios is.. I mean I really do not know the old bios will accept the new harddisk or not.

The bad and ugly is.. Acer lack of support the driver / update bios. Maybe acer does not want me to replace the harddisk but want me to get the new laptop instead.

Since it uses a Pentium M, I don't see you having any issues.

Depends on what model is, but normally the HD cover on the bottom is obvious to be found. They almost have 1 to 2 screws there and a HD cartidge or not or come with a specific adapter for certain models. We you cannot see any cartidge or adaper inside the cover, it will be easy to disassemble or upgrade a HD.
