I do not think any software can retrieve the serial number on your harddrive. The only way to get the serial number is to actually look at the harddrive. The serial number is always written on the sticker ontop of the drive.

You need to shut the system off to remove the harddrive safely.

HD Tune (INFO Page) or PC Wizard 2008 might help.

Seagate has a tool for getting serial numbers from hard drive, not sure if it works on other brands besides seagate though (unlikely that it does). It's called drivedetect.

Hdtune gives me the wrong serial number for my harddrives. If you are setting up an RMA, it is best to actually read the numbers on the harddrive. It is the only way to know the right serial number.

Sure it can, both under Windows and Linux. (You can even change the serial number of HDD via software means.)

Everest correctly reports serial number of my HDDs (2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB). I compared the info on Everest with the info on the HDD sticker.

Run Everest, go to menu "Storage" and select "ATA".

HDTune, PC Wizard, Everest and WD Diagnostics give the same serial for my WD drive.

I have an Acer Aspire 3100 Model number BL51. The system crashed, and I have to purchase Recovery CD's. The serial number has been smudged out beneath the hard drive--I don't know how. The entire sticker is simply smudged, even the bar code--and I can not order CD's without it. Does anyone know how I can get this serial number? Thanks a lot.

If the HD is still spinning:

Download 'speccy' and hook up your HD to a working system - 'speccy' should see it and give you the serial number for the drive.

    See:

    Good luck.

I wouldn't think you would need the serial number of the HD to order Recovery CD's, rather you would need the serial number and model number of your laptop. If you cannot read the label on the bottom of your laptop you can find the serial number with Everest also.
