How to tell if the LCD needs replacing?

So I dropped my laptop (long story...embarassing... :p ) Everything seems intact except the screen. There are patches of red flickering pixels everywhere, and the colour balance otherwise is completely off. For example, I don't remember what the default colour scheme looks like on these forums, but the background of the text box i'm using now is completely cyan.

So I want to know if I can just buy an LCD replacement and install it myself.

But I don't want to spend however much on an LCD to find out it was actually a problem with the output from my computer to the screen, or the connection, and not the screen itself.

Can anyone give me any ideas or point me in the direction of somewhere I can find more info?

    Thanks!

Edit: guess I should mention, this is an Asus W3V 14.1"

Usually if you know yourself around your computer you can buy an LCD for around $200-300 (probably less since it's 14.1") From an LCD reseller and install it yourself.

Yep, already found a few for around $300 USD...much cheaper than a new laptop

But I don't know if that'll actually fix the problem.

Hook the laptop to an external monitor and see if you experience the same issues. I've seen things like this caused by video cards. It's possible you may have damaged the card, cracked the mobo or video card connector, etc.

Try the external monitor. If you have the same symptoms then you'll be better off to send it back to Asus to get fixed.
