I'm customizing a laptop right now and I'm going to order a laptop with 1 GB ram....but my plan is to later buy a 1gb stick off the net and install it.

But I'm kinda worried the laptop will come preloaded with 2 512MB rather than
1 1GB stick and an empty slot. Is there anyway I can tell how many "sticks" they put in based on the RAM specifications/model?

Its normally difficult to tell. Some people do post what they got as their RAM configuration, on this forum, and various other notebook forums on the Internet. The best thing to do is use a search engine, and try and find the RAM configuration of the notebook that way.

If that doesn't work, then you may be able to ask the company selling the notebook itself, what the RAM configuration is. They may or may not know themselves, however.

Some dealers(such as dell) give options for 1GB W/ 1 DIMM
    or 2

90% of the time, if it's not listed, it's going to be the cheaper route, aka 2 dimms.

Buy a thinkpad, you can customise everything including the configuration of the Dimms included. Most other manufacturers do also if you are buying online that is....
