I've got a new seagate ST9120822AS, it's got some click nosie every 1-2sec at idle, but very silent when transfering files.

How should I check it the HD is alright? Is that sound normal and can be fixed or not?
I ran it with HDtune once, then I wasn't able to as I don't know how to log in as Admin.......

    Pls help thanks.

Just find a program that can read the drive's SMART data. Even something like SpeedFan has the feature nowadays.

Try programs HDDLife or any other program....
If you running Vista, try to disable UAC before using these programs...

Can't you ran HDtune yet? When you can check if speed is OK. Then go to their website, find your HD and compare. That's how i found out i had a defective HD. Not only half the speed i should have but a lot of spikes (don't know if this is the right word...)

I think my new HD is the same as yours. In idle i had that click, even after i installed a new windows with no programs in background.
Since i changed from XP MCE2005 Portuguese to XP SP2 English the clicking stopped...That's strange...
I had that clicking noise for 2 months....Annoying.

PS: browsing through different forums i noticed a lot of people have that "problem" on notebooks.
