I prefer thermal paste for CPU's. Thermal pads get gunked up with dust and if you aren't careful when removing your CPU heatsink, you will shred the pad into little pieces. You don't have to buy ones from Dell, they sell plenty on Ebay.

Use thermal paste, MX-4 for example performs very well and is easy to apply. The 940xm can get pretty warm, especially when overclocking it with Throttlestop. The paste will give you much better results than the pads.
