I have been trying to setup cellular connection for my Vaio Z2 using Gobi 2000 3G modem (Mini PCI-e) for almost two weeks without any success. These Gobi cards available in eBay at reasonable price but many venders fails to mention the fact that they are indeed branded units. UN2420 is a such card with HP firmware built-in.

Once you install the card in the socket and connect the relevant antennae, you must see a new device included in the Device Manager under LPT/COM ports. It will be named something like “HP un2420 Mobile Broadband Module” and it will be flagged with yellow triangle to indicate that the correct driver not loaded.

At this point Gobi 2000 is waiting for the drivers to be loaded by Windows Services using “QDLService2kHP.exe” file.

Gobi 2000 Device drivers are available to download from many laptop manufactures support websites such as Lenovo, Panasonic, Dell, Vaio and Asus so on. But only driver works on HP un2420 is HP driver available in HP support site. But wait, this driver package will only install the driver for the “HP un2420 Mobile Broadband Module” and rest of the driver loading process will be halted as QDLService2kHP.exe will verify your laptop as a non HP product. So you don’t need to head for HP site right now as there is a workaround.

A smart gentleman from Poland named DjExit has a solution for this. He had modified the QDLoader QDLService2kHP.exe file not to verify the laptop brand in driver loading process.

Setting up HP UN2420 for Non HP Laptops
    Author: DjExit

    1. Install the original drivers package GobiInstaller.msi (Included in the ZIP file)

    2. After completion of the process we should see new device in Devices Manager under "Ports" a New com port with the name of "QDLoader".

    3. Run Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> the Services or on Win 8 or later you can see the services under Task Manager Services tab.

    4. We are looking for "Qualcomm Gobi 2000 Download Service" or something similar to that, and then right-click to stop service so you can replace QDLService2kHP.exe from following step.

    5. Copy and replaces the file QDLoader "QDLService2kHP.exe" from the "Patch to DjExit" from package to "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ QUALCOMM \ QDLService2k" or "C: \ Program Files \ QUALCOMM \ QDLService2k" depending the version of the operating system.

    6. We return to services and restart the "Qualcomm Gobi 2000 Download Service".

    7. At this point, should see additional device like a modem, com ports diagnostic ports and GPS (NMEA) are being installed.

    8. After a while, we have a fully functional modem without additional software, external software :)

After the driver installation process you can download connection utility from your PC manufacture and make the connection.
