Anyone know how well the Pentium 2117u performs? Based on the spec sheets, it looks like an Ivy Bridge running at a lower clock speed and stripped of a couple of features (like Hyper Threading, Turbo Boost, HD2000 instead of HD3000 graphics). Will it lag when browsing media-intense websites like Yahoo, CNN and the like? Can it play HD Youtube videos without stuttering? I want to buy a system for my parents who don't do much beyond browsing the web, skyping and viewing youtube videos and found a $300 notebook that seems to fit the bill perfectly, provided this CPU is any good.

It will be fine for the tasks that you mentioned. Basically any modern Core-based CPU should be fine.

The cpu should be sufficient, I agree.

The igpu is what I would be a little concerned about (without having played/tested it myself).

Is there any way to check it out before you buy it?

    Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys! I decided to place an order for one and will play around with it for a bit when it comes in and post back. I haven't been able to play around with one in stores, so I have no idea how well it performs. Hopefully it'll be faster than the AMD C60 -powered netbook I used to own.

I have a netbook with a Celeron 877 processor, which is a Sandy Bridge version of the Pentium 2117u, and it is amazingly capable. The iGPU is overpowered for video playback; you'll have no stuttering issues. I routinely play 6-8 year old games on medium to high settings. Some current games, like Path of Exile, can be played on low settings.

It's amazing that a 7-8 year old gaming desktop can now fit into a $300 netbook.

I'd recommend adding a $20 second stick of RAM for better performance. You'll get a double boost this way; dual-channel memory access plus the extra memory.

I'll definitely report back once I receive my system. For the record, it's a 15" Dell Inspiron 15 notebook for my parents.
