ADAPTER A ...
HSTNN-LA09
19 Volts . 7.89 Amps . (Watts not labelled but looks to be 150W)
- I think that this adapter might be the original factory adapter for the HP Elitebook 8510w and/or the HP Elitebook 8710w?
ADAPTERS B1 / B2 / B3 ...
HSTNN-CA16 / HSTNN-DA16 / HSTNN-DA24
All 3 of these are rated at: 19.5 Volts . 10.3 Amps . 200W
- I think that one [or more] of these 3 adapters is the original factory adapter for HP Elitebook 8740w, although I am wondering whether HP shipped the most powerful 8740w's with their 230W adapter such as HSTNN-DA12?
My question is, how well will ADAPTER A work in place of ADAPTER B to power the following HP 8740w laptop and keep its battery charged?
HP Elitebook 8740w -- XT910UT#ABA
Core i7 740qm
8GB DDR3
500GB 7200rpm HDD
nVidia Quadro FX 3800M
Thanks for your replies.

Welcome to the forum!
Yes, that is a 150W adapter. 19x7.89 = 149.91.
I wouldn't play with that on a top-end 8740W, you might get the adapter to overheat quite easily...and wreak havoc one way or another.

For light use, think internet, it will be alright since th system won't draw a lot of power, but I wouldn't do anything remotely intensive using that psu. It might do in a pinch (until you get a proper adapter), but that's about it. I would order a replacement capable of giving the notebook the right amount of power. A used adapter shouldn't be too expensive on eBay.

Assuming it's an original HP power source, it will work fine, but the laptop will throttle the CPU or GPU clocks at high load. If you want full performance, you need a 200W or higher adapter.
How well will 150W-adapter [for HP_ 8710w] work with HP_8740w [HP says 200-230W+]?
