How will these three perform against eachother and how much of a performance gain will I see between them?
- 200 GB 7200rpm (cheapest)
- 320 GB 5400rpm (20$ more)
- 320 GB 7200rpm (100$ more)
I know the latter will be the best but im not sure about the other two. Also will the differences be very noticeable? (like what percentages better)

According to Tom's Hardware 2.5" HDD charts, the 7200rpm 200GB may have a fractional lead but personally I would get (have got) the 320GB 5400rpm for more space and a lower power consumption. The 320GB 7200rpm should have a clear lead on performance but, so far, I haven't seen any benchmark results to confirm the reality.

Ok, I think that's what I'm going to do, especially if it uses less power. How does the most expensive compare to the 320gb 5400rpm?
-
the first two will have about the same read/write speeds, however the 7200rpm will have faster access times, although this is a trade off for storage.
Yep, obviously the 320gb 7200rpm hd will be the fastest, based on the read/write speed of the 200gb 7200 drive u can expect a read/write of about 60-65 mb/s due to the higher platter density. But i was not aware that this drive had even been released yet!
the advantages of the most expensive over the 5400 are:
faster read/write speeds
faster access times
disadvantages are:
higher cost
increased heat production
increased power consumption -
What about more power consumption (even though its probably almost unnoticable) I think I've decided on the 320 5400 anyway
-
I would agree with jisaac. The performance gain wouldn't be that much in terms of overall system performance. But in real world read/write performance i would say you'll probably save a couple of seconds on some data intensive (massive data transfers) read/write tasks.
Also, take into consideration that tha faster the rpm is and the more voltage is pumped into it the more heat it produces and more heat means it could have lesser lifespan compared to the one that produces less heat. -
Depends on the hard drive company. Some 200GB 7200RPM drives have lower power consumption than 320GB 5400RPM drives.
How will these three perform against eachother? (hardrives)
