How would I take my hard drive backup up the recovery and the main partion and transfer it to a new drive. What adapters would I need to connect the new drive the computer in order to back it up.

Effectively I want to transfer the old hard drive to the new one so all I have to do after that is pop in the new one and it will load exactly like my old one did.

Windows has an excellent faculity for this if you are running vista.
it copies the exact partition size however. You may need to copy them one at a time.

You could also use an imaging program for this task, such as Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost.

How would I plug in my new HDD in my computer while the existing one is in it to make the transfer?

I don't have my Windows machine since it is being repaired, so I can't walk you through Vista's built-in restore features. However, using Acronis, you could create a bootable CD, plug in the new HD via a USB enclosure, and transfer an image over to the new drive.

I would use Acronis True Image and then you can either backup your current drive to a image on an external or network drive and then run Acronis TI on the new computer and copy the backup to the new computer HDD, or you can put the old laptops HDD in an external enclosure and then just use Acronis TI to clone that disk to your new laptop's HDD.

I have an external hard drive that has free space. Is it possible to use the Lenovo Software to backup my computer to that external HD and then load Thinkvantage using the blue button on startup when I put in the new HDD? Will the ThinkVantage software backup the hidden partion?

LenovoT61B, do not make multiple posts on the same topic again. Cross posting is bad forum etiquette, and most of all, it's against our forum rules. Your threads have been merged. Thank you.

These are ThinkPad specifics that I do not know; I don't run Windows on my good old T42, so I'm afraid I can't answer those questions. Can the Lenovo software create images of volumes?
