    How: Make 7mm SSD fit & work in 9.5mm Caddy/Space ?

So, can I make the 7mm Crucial M4 fit into the 9.5mm space of X61/ T61 / any standard HDD caddy/ slot on a Thinkpad?
If so, what do I need?

I want to get a 7mm assuming that when newer machines are out they could be thinner (e.g. X2xx / Newer Ultrabooks/ etc).

Right now its 9.5 mm in X61T, but in future machines might be thinner..
So should I opt for a 7mm drive instead? Future proofing?

Depending if you buy an upgrade kit or just the bare drive, it may come with the spacer for use with 9.5mm drives. Not sure about the 7mm M4 but the Samsung 830 notebook upgrade kit came with a 2.5mm spacer for fitting into the larger caddy.

I would imagine that Crucial might have a similar kit.

Besides that, you should really take a look at your notebook's drive caddies. Some are set up with screws such that a 7mm drive is fine because it's held in place by screws. Others have flexible caddies without screws in which case you'll need a spacer.
