Hello,
I tried to install a 500 gb Samsung Evo 860 SSD in the second HDD slot of my HP 8760w.
The install went fine but when I boot the machine I get the black screen with cap lock and num lock flashing 3 times, repeating a few times before the fan turns on full blast and no further changes.
I can't even shut down the laptop without removing the battery.
I can't imagine a HD causing a bios problem but I don't know. Kinda new to laptops.
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you remove the drive? Did you boot up properly afterward?

Sorry, should have included that. Yes, the laptop boots fine after the removal of the SSD.
Tried several times thinking that maybe I hadn't seated it properly. Same every time. -

Sorry it has been a while since last post. I have tried a few more things and have found that in fact the Computer does see the SSD. It is Win 10 that doesn't seem to be able to find it. Device manager does see all my drives, just can't access them.
I have even gone so far as to get another HDD to verify that it wasn't the SSD. I have seen various posts saying it is a driver issue but have not found a Win 10 driver for a HP 6870w. All the drivers at the HP site stop at Win 8.1
At this point I have a 1.5Tb drive in the second slot and a 500Gb SSD in the docking station slot and the bios see them as well as the main drive. -
you can spend more time on figuring out why, or you could do what tillerearth said, swap another out and see if the same issue happens again with your machine, on the same sata slot.tilleroftheearth likes this.
