I suspect I have a faulty CPU. The present CPU is RH80536 730, SL86G (written on the CPU). If I get a new CPU (SL86G), do I also have to match the RH80536 number? Will I have to flash a new BIOS? The present CPU is 1.6/2m/533.

As long as you get a sonoma cpu (533MHz FSB) it will be a direct dropin.
By may I ask why you think your cpu is faulty? What's your computer doing? -
It will freeze the display, intermittently, at any time during boot or any other time. Sometimes, then I just move it slightly and it starts processing again right where it left off. Other times, I can press on it, at no one particular place, and it will resume. When it freezes, if I just let it sit, it stays frozen.Sometimes, when I turn it on, the blue lights come on, you can hear whirring, but the screen stays dark I the have to move the pc around. Then, the HP logo will appear and it may go all the way through windows load. But it may also just start to load windows and then quit. It does'nt act like memory although I replaced the memory. I don't think its a power problem since it always resumes where it left off. I guess it could be a connection problem but I don't think so since sometimes all I have to do is turn it slightly. It is two years old and the problem started abount two months ago.
BTW, is the sonoma a brand name? -
Well, I replaced the CPU, still same problem. Then, I disassembled the unit down to the system board. Reconnected everything and re-assembled it. Now, I don't even get the LED's to come on when I try to power up. A single led on the front of the unit will "flash briefly".No leds on the led panel come on at all. Same thing with either the batt or AC power. Any ideas?

You obviously did not reconnect everything. It sounds as if your freezing problem is related to your harddrive, not the processor. Your best bet is to take it back apart and double check that you connected everything properly.

I have reassembled it twice. No luck. Also, it would freeze sometimes even before the HP Advent logo would appear; before it even got tothe hard drive. Move it slightly and it would resume boot. Does anyone have any ideas on the power problem>
-
It might be a loose connector of some sort due to the fact it resumed working when the device itself was physically moved.
-
Does anyone know if I disassemble it down to just the system board; then connect just the LED panel assmbly, should the LED panel lights come on?
-
Well, I have now replaced the system board, the HDD, and tried an external monitor. Still same problem. I have disassembled it several times. Connections appear good. I guess i will try the led panel next. I don't know what else it might be. I need some ideas.
-
If you replaced the board and it's still doing it, it's something else or you're not putting it together correctly. How about a bad memory stick?
-
I thought of it being a bad memory module when the problem first began. I have two 1gb modules. I tried each of them, one at at a time, in both slots. Same problem. But since it sounds so typical of memory, I have ordered a 512 stick and will try that next. (maybe both modules I have now are bad - I know, I'm stretching)
