Hello, I'm currently trying to find a new laptop for myself, and I'm in a situation where I'm standing between two different laptops.

The first one is the HP 17.3" Pavilion dv7-3079wm that has:

    - AMD Turion II Ultra dual-core processor M600 2.4GHz, 2MB L2 cache

(I belive this is 800 mhz fsb, right?)

    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

    - 4GB DDR2 system memory

While the other PC, the HP Pavilion dv6-1362nr has:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2Ghz, 2MB L2 cache and 800 mhz fsb

    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

    - 4GB DDR3 system memory

The question now is; what of these two PC's are the best gaming wise? They got the same GPU, the dv7 with the amd has worse ram (ddr2) but more cpu speed (2,4), and the dv6 has better ram (ddr3) but less speed on the cpu (2,2).

Also, the CPUs are of a different brand.

What would you say gave the best gaming result? And, is it by a landslide, or wont I even notice the difference?

(Games that will be played; modern warfare 2, dragon age, diablo 3, borderlands, etc)

Thanks for all feedback and inputs.

    M600 isn't using 800MHZ.
    All AMD Processor uses Hypertransport.

Ok, so what difference does that make between the two processors?

For gaming purposes, you aren't going to see any kind of difference. I'd just go with the cheaper one.

I'd say Intel, personally. AMD mobile processors are an absolute joke at the moment. Really, the Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 is going to perform perhaps a little better than the AMD listed.

    1480 1525
Well according to the Passmark CPU benchmark chart the Turion II M600 scores 1480 compared to the T6600's 1525 which isn't too bad. There's also no telling what kind of RAM (DDR2 vs DDR3) and system configuration the T6600 is, considering 2.4 GHz C2D processors are not scoring as high as the 2.2 GHz T6600. The T7700 @ 2.4 GHz scores in at 1354, the T8300 @ 2.4 scores 1471, the desktop model C2D 6600 @ 2.4 scores 1453. Technically the T8300 and T7700 should be scoring higher since they have larger L2 caches assuming they all are using RAM with equivalent speed and latency.

The big reason to go Intel in this comparison is for the better power efficiency of comparably capable Intel and AMD systems. So I'd decide based on budget and price here.

Thanks for good answers. The Dv6-one was the cheaper option, and in raw system power it was superior aswell (if we follow the benchmarks). It made my choice much easier, and I even saved around 200$ on buying it instead of the other option (dodged the tax costs aswell).

Now I just have to wait for the mail service :)

What are the actual prices of the two computer's you're comparing? We might be able to find you something better for the money and probably much higher build quality, since you know, they are HPs

Not to dog on your ability to choose, but HPs are kind of notorious for having early breakdown issues as well as being very hot sometimes. Sure they look pretty, but you might want to consider a different computer manufacturer. Also the Radeon 4650 graphics cards they have in them are probably GDDR2 memory and probably not clocked too high in the first place. If size isn't an issue there is a Sony 14" CW series that may be worth looking at on Newegg that is equiped with:

Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 (just like the HP)
4 GB DDR3-1066 memory (just like the HP)
Nvidia Geforce GT 230M w/ 512 MB of what I'd assume to be DDR3 or GDDR3 VRAM
    320 GB 5400 RPM HDD

It's $849 on Newegg, incredibly sexy looking in that white case of it's and DAMN DO I WANT ONE!!!

Thanks for the help mobius1aic, I saw the speccs on that one aswell, and it looks sweet, I have to admit that. I've owned a HP before, so I'm aware that I might have to dust clean it once in a while in order for the GPU to survive past the magical one-year mark.

I payed 750$ on Newegg for the HP, they have the same speccs except for that the HP comes with a 4650, with twice the memory amount on it. Im unaware on how high the memory is clocked, but it scored better on http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html so I'm following those numbers.

Also, the hard-drive was faster aswell, so I just had to sacrifice the risk of ending up with a melt-down-pc (thats what you get for trading with the HP-devil!) for getting a cheaper system with more power. Only had 900$ to spend in total, and this way I could get myself a headset + dragon age aswell.

But again, thanks for all the help, I appriciate it :)

The intel version is better for sure but if you want your DDR3 ram to run at full speed u need a processor with a 1066MHz FSB... AMD might be cheaper but the overheat more than intel ones....

You mean, they just create more heat.

I remember a time where "being hot" was a good thing

On a side note, the Turion IIs are roughly as good as Core 2 Duos in terms of heat output and performance; they're only slightly worse and they cost less.

Only for a girl, still, only for a girl... :p

The AMD notebooks I've used are warmer than their Intel counterparts, but what I've noticed is that it depends on the make of the notebook and the form factor too instead of just AMD vs. Intel CPU's.

I prefer Intel myself, it is the standard for a reason (even when they were the hot ones).

I hope you realize that girls also use that terminology(to describe both guys and other girls mind you) >.>

What I've come to notice is that half the retail sold notebooks nowadays are AMD based(considering they're cheaper than their Intel counterparts, even Pentium Dual Cores) so seems they're not doing too bad.

Mine Turion II M520 is okay. Hovering around 50ºC going to 60 when some bigger calc. pushes it. This is Winter so i expect more fan work in Summer and 10ºC more temp for same job.
