Ok I'm upgrading the ram of my Envy 15, which has an aftermarket 840qm processor and I was wondering if there was any advantage to using aftermarket ram instead of the HP ram which runs 1333mhz. I have $700 to spend on 16GB, I will be using ram intensive programs which take up 10gb of space on average. Thanks.

Unless you'll be overclocking your CPU, 'after market' ram is a waste of time and money. You'll see less than a 1% difference no matter what RAM you use.

Off topic, but I would actually like to know what programs you're using that take 10 GB of RAM on average. $700 on 16 GB of RAM, you might as well be starting a cash bonfire.

It's not the programs - its the data sets (I'm pretty sure).

Buy as much ram as you need and ignore everything else about it, seriously.

Also there is no such thing as aftermarket ram or processors. HP gets their processors from the same place that you would, Intel or AMD. They also get their ram from the same places that you would, regardless of brand, one of the handful of actual ram IC manufacturers.
