    Hello,

My laptop has only one 16GB stick of Kingston valueram ddr4 2400 CL17. If i buy a kingston hyperx impact ddr4 2400 CL14 stick, will it work in dual channel mode with the existing stick? Or laptop might not boot? Thank you.

It might choose to run both at 2400CL17 and work
    It might not
It might depend on which stick is in which slot

No guarantees which is why it's not recommended to mix'n'match

@Unhappy User it will run as CL17 without problems, most likely.

Omg the mystery...thanks guys. Still indecisive. Has anyone actually tried a hyperx impact and ValueRam combo on this forum? Hyperx is on sale now and going cheaper than ValueRam so i am tempted.

Bottomline: will 2 sticks of ddr4 2400MHz at CL14 give me noticeable improvement in gaming performance compared to 2 ddr4 2400MHz at CL17? I'm referring to cpu intensive games of course. Thanks.

@Unhappy User they won't give you any noticeable improvements vs CL17.

Disappointing news guys I just took the laptop to the computer store to install a second memory stick and it appears that the existing stick is at the slot number 3 and to activate dual Channel we have to install the second stick on slot number 1 which requires disassembling the entire laptop. I just received my laptop back from MSI RMA with a brand-new cooling module and my temperatures are really better after several failed attempts to repaste it by MSI and the computer store so I decided not to risk another disassembly because the technician in the computer store did not do a good job repasting it the first time.

We tried installing the second stick in Slot 4 which is easy to access but that did not activate dual Channel mode. I am very disappointed with this choice that I have to make between good temperatures or dual Channel mode.

Can I fix it by buying 2x8GB sticks and installing them on the easy to access slots 2 and 4? On top of my exisiting 16GB stick on slot 3? Will this activate dual channel?

@Unhappy User dual channel RAM is really important only if you play games on iGPU, which is clearly not the case, and in some very specific workloads.

Incorrect, RAM is directly related to CPU performance and is important for any CPU-bound games and other workloads.

@Starlight5 All review units of my laptop, MSI GT62VR, have higher framerates in CPU-intensive games than my unit, and after thorough analysis, the only reason that can justify that is because they came with dual-channel mode activated while mine came with only 1 RAM stick. Yes the games in hardware-secrets article which you linked do not show any significant difference, I agree, but note that the test was performed on single player games. In multiplayer games, the CPU is taxed because of the presence of other human players, and a low-performing CPU like the i7-6700HQ does benefit from dual-channel mode, making it run more efficiently.

The argument here is not whether I need dual channel or not, but in what slots should I insert the sticks to activate dual channel, and if 2 sticks in the easy-access slots in addition to one stick in the hard-access slot will activate dual channel or not.

Slots 3 and 4 did not work.

Dual Channel finally worked by installing a second RAM stick in the easy-access slot #2. The first stick is originally in the hard-to-access slot #3. My laptop is MSI GT62VR 6rE.

I posted the performance gains by activating dual-channel mode here.
