I just got a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT and I have no issues. However it keeps spinning up.

It feels funny on my palms cause the hard drive is under my mouse track pad. This is where I also rest my hands.

I just wonder if this shaking from spinning up will shorting the life of the hard drive oor damage anything else.

My samsung hard drive died so reason for the WD.

It is very rare for HDDs to actually stop spinning. The background processes usually keep them running. Perhaps it is the head movements which you are noticing. Most of the Samsung HDDs are very quiet operators.

Sounds like a fan kicking on and off when it spins up.

I think what you mean is that it always spins down? Alot of notebook hard drives automatically parks its heads when idle after a short period of time.

yes then it sounds like a jet engine when I go do something. I just wonder if this will be ok or shorting the life span over time in a laptop.

    Another 'whoosing sound' thread.
WD drives have this behaviour, what you feel are the platters spinning.
I haven't used Samsung drives, but maybe they are quieter.
Hitachi makes also quiet drives. But bare in mind single vs dual platters have a direct correlation in the vibration and noise.

FYI I bought a Hitachi 5K500.B 250GB drive (1 platter inside) and it barely vibrate, no 'jet sound' neither.
