    Hi,

Ive recently purchased a new notebook to replace my old one. I was quite surprised at the cooling system for the notebook. The CPU is a T7400 @ 2.16ghz. Although I can hear a fan spinning you cant actually see one under the chassis, nor can you see any particular input for air, only the output vent on the side.

I was wondering how does the notebook manage to cool if the fan is inside the chassis?

All computers have fans on the inside... some just happen to have more noticable vents than others. My laptop, an older Toshiba, has a huge very noticable fan on the bottom, covered by a metal mesh, as well as several vented fans around the perimeter. Your new laptop probably has more obscured fans.

chances are your fan is sat right next to your cpu. On mine it is and it blows hot air over some pipes and out of a vent. Cant see it unless i take the cpu panel off the bottom of my laptop

    Its a Mitac 8258i.

I was wondering, because does this mean it is safer to use on say... a bed providing the vent has plenty of room to let air out?

    The heatsink looks like this:

I was just confused about how well it can cool down with this setup.. my last notebook had a very obvious fan grill.

Maybe the intake is on near the keyboard area, rather than underneath it. I will never know until i see it. If there arent any, the ventilation is not optimal, but maybe is enuf since the GPU is a integrated one.

No, it's still a bad idea to put your laptop on a bed or couch because the soft, stuffed, cusiony materials they are made of will retain the heat and prevent your laptop from venting properly. If you put your laptop down on something soft for a few minutes, it won't be a major issue (and by few I mean like 5, more than that and it may freeze/shutdown due to overheating).

There's some vents in the middle, the air goes in from there.. if u buy a cooler pad, get those center fan types.

Never put it on bed as all the intake vents at the bottom will be jammed. They look small but air goes in from there. Try with a piece of paper(as thin as possible) on the vents and u ll see they get suck in.

I bought a cooler fan from Bestbuy which allows me to put my laptop on a bed or something.
