I dropped my laptop and now it doesn't work

It was sitting on the edge of my bed and I must have kicked it off while I was sleeping. It was open at the time so I'm guessing it rolled backwards, landed on the back of the screen and then the main chassis closed on top of it. The drop was about two feet but it was on to carpet and granted, it's the second time this has happened. The first time it was off; this time it was on.

It is not the harddrive, have tested with USB enclosure and is working fine. Also tested with another hdd and still no go

System powers on, all LED indicators light up except HDD and the CD drive starts seeking over and over again. Caps/num/scroll-lock don't respond and I'm fairly certain the harddrive doesn't actually spin up at all.

Inside seems to be fairly sound, looked at the CPU core doesn't appear to be cracked. No rattles, nothing fell out.

I'm guessing there's something wrong with either power going to the HDD or something along the IDE channel.

Anyone got ideas or tests for me to do? The system is a Clevo M37EW/Sager NP3870/Hypersonic Aviator CQ6.

 

Have you tried resitting everything? Like the ram and the different cards insides?

 

Resat CPU, ram, harddrive, CD drive, Wi-Fi card, keyboard.

Tried without CD drive, same thing. HDD still wouldn't spin up. All indicator LED's except hdd lit up.

 

Maybe the connector is damaged... Does it boot without the hd?

 

does the bios come up? Can you verify that the HD is not recognized by the bios?

 

I hope you're still under warrany and to call em ASAP..

 

No it does not boot without the HDD. BIOS does not come up with or without HDD, just a blank screen and the cd-drive clicking away.

 

It's four years old.. I got my pre-order in for the NP8660 so.. I guess timing could have been a little bit better, but in all not really bad timing. I just want to be able to create a slip-streamed XP installation first, and it would make transferring files, etc far easier.

 

You could try draining out all the power, by removing the battery, AC, and all sources of power....Hold down the Power Button for 15 seconds and then try to boot..!!
Or some component on your motherboard is damaged which has caused it to go into a kinda cut-off mode, so as to protect the other parts from getting damaged..!!
Also try removing the wlan and lan chips, and then boot..!!

 

Crisis averted... It was the antique stick of 512mb ram. Next to the processor and Wi-Fi card it's the only original removable component of the laptop left =\

At least it wasn't the 1gb stick. That would've been painful.

 

Are you sure the stick was bad? I highly doubt the fall damaged your ram. My bet is that the ram wasn't quite seated properly to begin with and got knocked loose with the fall. I would try putting the ram back in and making sure that both modules are properly installed.

 

Well I tried running each ram stick individually in both slots, 1gb works in both, 512mb works in neither.

I don't know how else to test the 512. I'm not going to complain to much, just happy it's working.
